In today's rapidly changing economy and growing professional and educational expectations, it becomes increasingly more difficult for our youth to compete for their survival. And it's not just here in Pasadena, people are experiencing this phenomenon everywhere in our country.
I live on the corner of N. Fair Oaks and Howard, and every day as I drive to or from home I see children idly hanging out at the bus stops or walking up and down the streets. Just a few months ago an emancipated foster youth was shot to death in the building across from my apartment. Changes must take place to save our children!
We can no longer afford to stand by and watch our youth being lost. We can no longer afford to watch them being arrested, getting pregnant and growing indifferent toward their own future. We have to roll up our sleeves and make every effort to reverse these results of societal apathy. The best place to start is our public schools.
In today's world being an effective school board member is largely about understanding that our children are no longer just a part of our community. They are part of a merciless global economy. Their future depends on leaders with broad vision and an unwavering commitment to prepare them to meet life's challenges.
In addition to my cross-cultural life experience, I bring with me an extensive practical knowledge of policy making, shared governance and social services. With your support I will:
- Focus on engaging and empowering parents to become active partners with teachers in the educational process of their children. I will forge partnerships with local non-profit and business organizations to collaboratively move forward with progressive changes in our schools. Together we will reinvent our district to become a role model for the entire Nation.
- Promote educational reforms that will raise the academic achievement of all children, and reintroduce vocational/technical training to prepare our students to join the global workforce of tomorrow.
- Ensure responsible fiscal management and equitable resource distribution so that the resources actually reach schools. I will promote community-driven policy for program placement and student assignment -- no more school closures without a plan. Together, we will support our students, our teachers and our schools!
And I will advocate tirelessly at the State and Federal level on behalf of our schools.
