Alberto Garantón (a.k.a. Albert Crombie) was born in the year 1979 in the city of Caracas, Venezuela. He started out with music as a child receiving weekly violin lessons at the early age of 6. But his first real challenge with music came along at age 13 when he joined a rock band formed by school friends playing the bass guitar as his new instrument. The band mainly played cover songs by guns n’ roses (appettite for destruction album), metallica and couple of original songs. At the age of 17 and fresh out of high-school he decides to get seriously involved with music and begins to study the saxophone by taking private lessons and joining the ‘Simon Bolivar’ Conservatory in Caracas. After 2 years of saxophone lessons he moves to the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina to study at the Berklee School of Music (Buenos Aires Branch) and graduates in 2002 with the title of ‘Saxophone Performance & Jazz Composition’. The years that followed gave him a nice ‘run’ playing the saxophone continuously in the local jazz scene and was rewarded by recording several albums for various Argentine Jazz Record Labels. He recorded for Notorious Records (2003), BAU Records (2003-2005) and delivered an honest recording for EMI Records on Ernesto Jodos “Perspectiva” album (EMI Records S/Jazz Series 2004). Simultaneously during his jazz saxophone years he was constantly listening to his electronic music heroes as well; Photek, Luke Vibert, Aphex Twin, DJ Shadow, Boards of Canada and especially Plastikman were some influences too. That legion of artists were creative geniuses in his mind and he would constantly be switching his home-stereo system between his jazz and classical music ‘marathons’ to his afternoon ‘electronic music matinees’. He was beggining to appreciate things about the music he had previously been ‘missing out’ and in 2005 decided it was time for him to start composing his own tunes on the computer. He introduced himself to software programs like Reason 2, Live 4 and Pro-Tools while also gearing up with a couple of synthesizers and drum sequencers to ensure more composition and sound capabilities. He started studying a lot and began pursuing his own personalized view on electronic music, especially his most intimate style: minimal techno. He likes to create his sounds from ‘scratch’ and work his way up but he still considers himself a young student of the artform. As the era of technology quickly expands his desires remain pretty much as they did before the “computer days”. He’s played with DJ’s like Samuel L. Session (Be as One Imprint/Klap Klap) and Sian (Octopus Recordings) in parties held by a group of friends who support the artform like EFM Producciones C.A. and Helix25. AC doesn’t consider himself a DJ since he doesn’t really mix with vinyl or cd’s and relies much on the computer (with all risks involved) for his ‘live performances’ whether it is him playing his own compostions or a more varied DJ set. The computer has become his tool of expression on his views of the world, which range from music, to politics, to a healthy vegetarian meal. He will be releasing his music with EFM Records who provide him with support and no limitations to the possiblities for new sounds and new music. He also has a small ‘2 track’ EP called “Shoebox” released on PF Records (netlabel.pastedfuture.com) based in Buenos Aires and founded by Federico Pugnali. After spending almost 8 years in the search of the jazz language and saxophone techniques he has finally landed on a ‘planet’ where the expression is more true to his intimate ideals about his music and hopes to maintain the evolution that jazz has developed and sustained for more than a century...............(SPANISH)................Alberto Garantón (a.k.a. Albert Crombie) nacio en caracas, venezuela en el año 1979. Se inicio en la musica desde muy niño (6 años) tocando el violín y asistiendo a clases particulares semanalmente. Pero su primer real desafío con la musica sucede a los 13 años cuando se integra a una banda de rock formada por unos amigos de la escuela ingresando así a tocar el bajo eléctrico. La musica de la banda consistía en tocar versiones de guns n’ roses (album Appetite for Destruction), Metallica y algunas canciones originales. A los 17 años y recién salido de la secundaria decide enseriarse con sus estudios musicales ingresando a estudiar el saxofon en el conservatorio “simon bolivar” en caracas y ver clases particulares con varios maestros. Despues de 2 años de estudios en caracas se muda a la ciudad de Buenos Aires y termina la escuela graduándose de la ‘Berklee Shool of Music de Buenos Aires’ (Miembro del Berklee International Network) en el año 2002 con el titulo de ‘Saxofonista Ejecutante y Composición de Jazz’. Los años siguientes a su graduación lo mantuvieron en una excelente ‘corrida’ como saxofonista y fue recompensado grabando varios discos y tocando frecuentemente en la escena local. Grabo discos para Notorious Records (2003), BAU Records (2003-2005) y termina realzando su carrera en una grabación para EMI Records en el album “Perspectiva” del pianista Ernesto Jodos (EMI Records S/Jazz Series 2004) donde derrocha unos de sus mejores solos de saxo grabados. Paralelamente nunca dejo de escuchar la musica que tanto escuchaba en su adolescencia como las obras de Luke Vibert, Aphex Twin, Photek, DJ Shadow, Boards of Canada y sobre todo Plastikman. Vuelve a quedar asombrado con esta musica y empieza a apreciar cosas que antes había pasado por alto. El re-encuentro fue calido y en el año 2005 empieza a componer sus propios temas en la computadora introduciéndose a los programas Reason 2, Live 4, Pro-Tools, algunos sintetizadores y secuenciadores de ritmo analógicos. De esta forma empieza a encariñarse con esta nueva manera de componer y la usa como vehiculo para seguir implementando el lenguaje musical que venia desarrollando previo a los ‘programas de audio y ordenadores sofisticados’. Esa cercanía a la tecnología lo ayuda a expandir sus composiciones en busqueda de su autenticidad y su forma de trabajar consiste en crear todos sus sonidos desde ‘cero’ como punto de partida. Crombie no se considera un DJ (como describe la palabra) porque no mezcla con discos de vinyl ni CD’s y es solo después de varios años de trabajar en sus propias composiciones que empieza a elaborar cada vez mas sus sets y sus sonidos (tocados desde la computadora) para tocar en vivo. Ha logrado tocar en varios clubs de Caracas y Buenos Aires con artistas como Samuel L. Session (Be as One Imprint/Klap Klap) y Sian (Octopus Recordings) en fiestas organizadas por compañías productoras de eventos que apoyan esta música como EFM Producciones C.A. y Helix25. Crombie continua trabajando en su material discográfico, cuidadosamente seleccionando sus temas para ser editados por el sello discográfico EMF, Recoveco y Pasted Future (netlabel.pastedfuture.com) que le brindan un fuerte apoyo y ningún tipo de limitación a la hora de exponer nuevas ideas musicales. Ya salio el release de su primer EP para Pasted Future llamado “Shoebox” de 2 tracks. Tiene un gran aprecio a toda la musica en general y en especial a su mas intimo estilo (el techno minimalista), que espera que lo siga llevando a lo que tanto desea expresar con su musica. Despues de pasar casi 8 años en la busqueda de tecnicas del saxofon y composicion del lenguaje del jazz finalmente encuentra un refugio para sus nuevas ideas musicales continuando así la evolucion que ha sostenido el jazz y la musica creativa por mas de un siglo.
