Art Taylor (the drummer) asks almost every musician in his book of interviews (Notes and Tones)... "Do you play for yourself, the musicians, or for the audience?" Here are some responses. Kenny Clarke -"For the musicians; if they're happy, I'm happy. I don't think about the audience, and I never play for myself. I play for the front line and the rhythm section. Period!"
Elvin Jones -"I play the music! And I play the music because there's a way I know it should sound. This is what I'm striving to achieve: the interpretation that I know the composition requires."
Sonny Rollins -"I would say I'm playing for the sake of music. This is my first appearance since 1969. One of the reasons I stopped then was because things had got to the point where I found that playing was getting to be a real job and a chore, which I didn't dig. I spend as much money as necessary to get equipment, clothes or whatever I need to make an impression and to be into the music. It's all done for the music first, regardless of what it costs me. Many people have said that I have a lot of energy, which I do, because I'm playing for the music. For instance, I played a three-hour set one night in a nightclub, and they were trying to get us off the stage to turn the house over. In other words, I'm playing and thinking about trying to get the music across and nothing else. Time doesn't matter. Maybe a lot of the younger cats might not have that same energy. I've found that a lot of musicians I played with don't have the same kind of incentive. I thought it might be because I was who I am and they were working for me, so I was supposed to have more incentive than they did. "
