Aldo's Interests

| General | Coffee with character, coffee with soul, coffee with a heart. In other words, coffee from Intelligentsia and other microroasters promoting excellence and sustainability. Nothing better than seeing a customer get "Wowed" by a Black Cat espresso or capp the first time. Or when they get a latte with a rosette or heart (and soon, double and triple rosettes!)
Oh, and the Steelers. Except Rich, who's still a Jets fan. | | Music | In the store, mostly jazz and classical, occasionally interesting world music - and our favorite duo, Laren and Joe. In the car, anything goes: Kinks, Waterboys, Sinatra, Wilco, early Eminem, 90s BritPop, Floyd, Black 47, 70s Rock Operas, Ken Karsh and the soundtrack to Last of the Mohicans. | | Movies | When you own something like Aldo Coffee, you forfeit going to the movies or watching DVDs. But I guess you'd say our favorites are mostly classics Right Stuff, Hoosiers, Field of Dreams, In-Laws (the original), and The Producers (also the original), in no particular order. | | Television | News & Sports. Daily Show & Colbert. Project Runway/Hell's Kitchen. Bourdain. Craig Ferguson if we're up late. | | Books | Barista Magazine, Fresh Cup Magazine, Silver Spoon, Casual Cooking (Chiarello), French Laundry Cookbook (like we'll be putting our Thanksgiving mashed potatoes through a sieve three times... right), The Soul of a Chef/Reach of a Chef. | | Heroes | We'll limit this to just the context of the coffeehouse: Nick Cho is our idol, Doug Zell our model for decorum, Geoff Watts our muse and JaimeVan and James Hoffman the kids we would emulate if we actually liked science. David Schomer when applicable (a bit unrealistic for our local market). Blue Bottle's reverse Gibraltar (designing the milkfoam with the espresso), all the contestants at the Regional, National and World Barista Championships. But enough with the "everything's a latte" already. We like traditional monkshead capps and macchiatos that aren't filled to the brim with milkfoam. Thanks for listening. |
