Sounds Like
As a female singer/songwriter who favors the piano, Aleesha Dibbs is cursed to be compared to Kate Bush and Tori Amos for the entirety of her (hopefully long) career. Dibbs can be more appropriately likened to Fiona Apple. With arrangements that playfully deconstruct her obvious classical and jazz training and a voice that is sullen as it is sultry, the spectre of Apple's early work drapes itself heavily around Dibbs. She is, however, decidedly individual, with her unselfconsciously quirky and sweet compositions frequently evoking Regina Spektor, or dipping momentarily into Nico's territory. Usually responsible for manning keyboards and computers for local synth-rockers Beau Monde, the breadth of Dibb's abilities is startling.

Not only is Aleesha Dibbs cute, she’s also apparently Australia’s answer to Regina Spektor. Hot damn. So think spellbinding live shows, amazing vocal abilities, piano bashing and Alice-In-Wonderland-gone-wrong quirky tales of pirates, policemen and daisies. Aleesha has toured with some of the country’s most promising talents including Angus & Julia Stone and The Orange Bird. Now it’s Adelaide’s turn to see the Sydney singer in full flight, with Aleesha set to play the Grace Emily on Wed Jan 7 to launch her new EP Oh The Black, the White And The Rainbows.
Michelle Read - Rip It Up Magazine - Adelaide 2009
I prepare myself to hate her as she flounces onstage in a massive white tulle tutu and a bowler hat (two in one day!). Her keyboard is covered in flowers on the small stage at the end of the pokies lounge. She’s going to be another “quirky” artist, for sure. She’s going to shit me to tears.
Expectations suck. Abandon them. Aleesha Dibbs immediately proves herself to be a talented songwriter and performer. She’s kind of like, if you’ll allow pale comparisons, Karen O singing Patty Smith numbers in a strong yet delicate voice. Does that make sense? Not really? You had to see her. No, you have to see her. Mostly because I’m having trouble adequately describing her. In fact, I do hate her, for leaving me so wordless.
Fait Accompli’s drummer, “Mr Ray”, joins Dibbs onstage and gives a brash, clattering bottom to her beautiful highs, as she trills and coos above the sound of her keys among the neon gaming machines. There are so many people packed into the tiny room, having heard something amazing emanating forth, that I can no longer see her. It doesn’t really matter. Her sound is what’s important.
A.H. Cayley - Mess&Noise - My Filthy Riot 2009
"The aforementioned Aleesha Dibbs knocked me off my feet like Don Juan would do to a Hispanic chamber-maid, rocking out at her piano while ‘Amish Rasta’ Ray from Fait Accompli pounded his drums like… well like Don Juan would pound a Hispanic chamber-maid."
Mikey Carr - MusicFeeds - My Filthy Riot 2009
“If you took the voices of Joanna Newsom and the chick from Coco Rosie and mixed that with the Vaudeville finesse of the Dresden Dolls and then cut off Tori Amos’ hands and stuck them to a cute, hat wearing, skirt twirling songstress then you’d have something that resembled Aleesha Dibbs. This is something interesting, quaint and good for the ears.”
Groupie Magazine - March - 2009
“If Stevie Nicks lived in a tree house and saw all the way to the other side of the wall through a worm hole, then she would be Aleesha Dibbs. Sitting behind a giant electric piano, dressed like she’d fallen into Stevie’s wardrobe wearing Velcro, you will never forget an Aleesha Dibbs performance. Songs that swoop and soothe and scream, giant chords and booming drums (from the octopus, Ray Mondino) and eerie melodies that sound like a mad woman singing for a lost soldier on a distant hillside.”

Bio
“My Grandma has played the piano my whole life. Most nights the sounds
of Beethoven would send us off to sleep. There are photos of me playing the piano at the age of one or two”.
Aleesha Dibbs began learning classical piano at age six with lessons kindly donated by her grandmother.
And so the story of Aleesha Dibbs begins…
At 21 years of age Aleesha Dibbs has captivated audiences with her intensely rich poetic music, her free spirit and her theatrical live shows.
Her music has seen her travel widely across Australia independently with many artists
including; Angus and Julia Stone, The Orange Bird, The My Sydney Riot / La Femme family
and with singer songwriter Jez Mead.
Her songs come from rainforests, city abodes and a sixties love shack filled with flowers, teacups and The Doors playing loudly on the stereo. Her songs capture the beauty and innocence of a child, yet speak deeply of the human condition.
Her piano playing is reminiscent of a life in vaudeville, her vocals are a mix between
Kate Bush and Patti Smith with the live energy Gang of Four on Acid.
Heading to the Queensland rainforest in late 2008 she planted the seeds with Govinda Doyle who produced her debut single ‘Doorway’. This would later become the foundations of her debut album which was recorded in mid 2009 with good friend and drummer Mr Ray
alongside Mr Ian Pritchett at Noisegate Studios in Sydney.
With early 2010 being rubber stamped as the release date of her debut album
‘The Truth About Fiction’, her ode to new beginnings the debut single ‘Doorway’ is available now thru Sydney independent label MAKEyourself RECORDS, Australian home to
The Bungalows, Fait Accompli, Goons of Doom, Zeahorse and party makers My Sydney Riot.
Doorway welcomes you to the dawn of a new era. Enjoy your stay.
