ALESSIO ELIA - BIOGRAPHY (English)
CURRICULUM VITAE ET CURRICULUM STUDIORUM
Alessio Elia was born in Rome, on 24 April 1979.
In 1991 he started to study piano with Lidia Giuseppone.
He studied composition under the guidance of Giovanni Piazza at the "S. Cecilia" Academy of Music in Roma, where he graduated in 2004 (Degree in Composition, summa cum laude) and in 2006 (Perfecting Degree in Composition, summa cum laude and honour mention).
He attended the High Perfecting Course in Composition by "S. Cecilia" National Academy of Music in Roma, where he graduted in 2007 under the guidance of Azio Corghi.
In summer of 2003 he works as musical assistant to the direction with tv director Enrico Castiglione, during the concerts of "Festival Euro Mediterraneo" with the "Arturo Toscanini" Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Lorin Maazel.
In 2004 he took part to the 42. Internationalen Ferienkurse für Neue Musik (42nd International Summer Courses for Contemporary Music), in Darmstadt, where he studied with Brian Ferneyhough and Toshio Hosokawa and where he received a commission from Mehrklangorchester - Berlin for the "Italianità" Festival in Saarbrücken.
In 2005 he took a Perfecting Degree in Composition (Honour Degree), under the guidance of Azio Corghi, at the "Chigiana" Academy of Music in Siena, where he received a scholarship.
From 2005 to 2008 he attended the High Perfecting Course in Composition by the "Liszt Ferenc" Academy of Music in Budapest under the guidance of Zoltán Jeney.
In the same years he worked as a composer and researcher in Budapest, supported with a three-year fellowship awarded by the Hungarian Ministry of Culture.

Elia’s works had been broadcasted mainly by Magyar Katolikus Rádió (Hungarian Catholic Radio), EPER Radio (Budapest) and Magyar Televízió (Hungary).
He had elaborated a theoretical work "Semiografia della Musica Contemporanea – Ragioni di un'esigenza espressiva" ("Contemporary Music Semiology – Reasons of an expressive requirement") where he analysed the reasons that had led the twentieth- century composers to introduce new graphic symbols inside the structure of conventional signs, and he has structured the work dividing it in zones that belong to specific linguistic tendencies.
In May 2006 the Hungarian Theorist of Art Károly Ákos Windhager did a Conference about Elia’s Opera Trilogy on Géza Csáth by the Department of Comparative Literature in ELTE Budapest University.
On 14 June 2006 the opera "La Morte del Mago" ("The Magician's Death") – ensemble version – is performed successfully at Nyitott Muhely Concert Hall in Budapest.
On 16 December 2006 two monographic concert-interviews about the composer were organized.
The first one (musical afternoon) at the "Nyitott Muhely" Concert Hall presented by the Hungarian Theorist of Art Károly Ákos Windhager.
The second one (musical evening) at the "Rátkai Klub" Concert Hall presented by Magda Györi, President of "Con Spirito" Zenemuvészeti Egyesület ("Con Spirito" Musical Art Ensemble).
On 21 April 2008 Magyar Televízió, Hungarian State Tv, invited Elia for an interview about his opera trilogy on Géza Csáth.
The interview was broadcasted on 28 April 2008 on M1, First Channel of Magyar Televízió (see it in this myspace page).
In 2009 wins a fellowship as a researcher by the Norwegian Academy of Music, awarded by The Research Council of Norway.
He is currently working as musical researcher at the Music Department of the "Tor Vergata" University in Roma and by the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo, Department of Sonology.
He works as a critic and journalist for the review "Livecity" (Rome), "Musica Oggi" (Lugano), "Rézirat" (Budapest), "International Composers" (Boston).
From 2005 to 2008 he lives in Budapest and in Roma.
From 2009 he lives in Oslo.
