yeah, the sweeps are badass in that song. hah i know, i actually was still looking for a song to play like the week of the audition and i found it and practiced it nonstop for that whole week so i had it down solid.

but yeah, improvisation is tough and can't really be taught. it's just something that comes with time. i'm just starting to get the hang of it, cause i end up repeating a lot of things whenever i improvise and it just sounds kind of lame. that's awesome though. any berklee alum has to be an awesome musician aha. but yeah no problem man. if you search, you'll find a lot of people who play, im not really sure how many of them are that talented though, or at least at our age level. and berklee people are even harder to find. so yeah, if you have any more questions, i can try to help you.

yeah, juilliard is all classical. most music colleges are, minus berklee, columbia, and a few others. if not that, then jazz is the only other music they really teach or accept as legitimate. berklee's really one of the only ones that promotes the diversity in music. well, you could always cut the crusade after it goes into clean right before it goes back into the whole band. that was arond 5 minutes right? i mean, the song i performed is like 9 or 10 minutes, i just played the first 4 and a half minutes and i still got accepted aha.

well the one guy just picked up a guitar and just started playing a chord progression and just waited for me to pick up and just jam out and solo over it. then he asked me what key we'd want to jam a blues out in, so i told him b, and we jammed for maybe 30 seconds or so. that's all the improv is, just playing and improvising over progressions. after that, he asked me to play a g major scale, two different ways, an a minor scale. uhmm, we spent maybe like 2 or 3 minutes of him just asking me to play chords. like G Mm7, Em7, C7, Aaug, Bdim, FM7, etc. so definitely review your chords before you go there too.

yeah, all the awesome music schools are just too expensive and dont offer enough scholarship aid unless youre like a virtuoso.

well, maybe. i mean i performed "metropolis pt 1" the first 4 minutes and 42 seconds up until the really fast part by dream theater, and that's not even that shredly or like "WOW HE'S AWESOME AT GUITAR". it's just a really solid, technical song, so i chose to perform that, and then show off on the improv. so if you can play the crusade perfectly, i'd say go for it. whatever you're comfortable with and you think shows off what you can do.

and definitely practice sightreading. you don't even have to do it constantly. just practice at least like once a day just for 20 minutes maybe, and you'll see improvement right away. if you do that for a year, or even just like one hour a week, you'd be much better prepared than i probably was. i went in there without having looked at anything for 5 years and i did alright ahah.

GIT idk much about but if it's less expensive but still offers great classes, go for it. i might stay away juilliard though if i were you. places like that and yale, etc are all into classical music. you wouldnt be able to play anything but classical stuff if you were going to apply for guitar there most likely, so trivium won't cut it ahah. but if that's your thing, shoot for it.

oh, and if you haven't already, check on berklee's website for audition information, it was really helpful for me. keep in mind that your prepared piece can only be like 4-5 minutes, so you won't be able to do all of The Crusade unfortunately ahah.

yeah i know, like itd be bearable if they helped out everyone who got in cause i have the feeling a lot of the people who get in aren't just super rich and can afford that, idk. but yeah, it's a great school regardless, but i think i'll like chicago more. less competitive, and a lot more attractive girls at columbia than at berklee ahah.

yeah, the audition is incredibly nerve-racking. i was waiting for about 3-4 hours in a lobby at tri-c with other auditioners. they were all dressed up in like suits and ties and i just had on jeans and a t shirt and they were all performing like classical instruments and just looked so much more professional than i did. it was intimidating ahah. and then you get an interview, which was pretty relaxing actually. not too stressful. then they take you and put into a practice room for 15 minutes to go over sight reading. i havent sight read music in over like 5 years since i took piano lessons in like 6th grade, so i did my best and nearly memorized the two easier songs. then you finally get in there and there's just two guys waiting and you gotta play your prepared piece (i played a dream theater song). then you just jam with one guy for a while, play different scales, do the sightreading, then do call and response, with rhythm on your instrument as well as notes on voice, which sucks cause i can't sing ahah. then thats basically it and you walk out.

sorry if that was a little long but i just felt like explaining it. despite waiting for so long and being incredibly tense, the actual audition process was pretty good. they seemed to know what they were doing and how to handle business. although besides the audition we have had a lot of trouble reaching their offices when we call or email. so they can be a little impersonal, but the audition was fine. ahah, what a novel of a comment.

naa, sorry man. i applied and actually got accepted, which was ridiculously hard as it is. but then on top of that it costs 50k a year and they didnt give me any scholarships. so i couldnt really go. i wanted to go to chicago more anyway.

but yeah man, good luck with your application and audition next year if you're still doing it! let me know how all of that goes for you.
