Opera is the most highly under appreciated art form in my generation. Not many people my age have been to an opera. Those people are missing the rich and beautiful tones coming undaunted, with no amplification, from singer's lungs, up through their vocal chords, and out through their lips. They miss extravagant costumes of gems and bright cloth, or convincingly bedraggled peasants. They miss the thrill of over 50 instruments striking a soul-jarring chord that is overpowered by a single human voice. Opera has everything humans have been proven to love in entertainment. I want people to recognize the importance Opera has in the world in entertainment we find so important.
I am studying Opera to become a professional. My studies have given me a high respect and love for opera that others may not have. Many people do not appreciate the beauty and genius that is opera, not to mention it probably being the most difficult art form of all (and not just in my opinion). Vocally alone it is the most challenging, then just think of no mikes, acting for a venue with thousands of people, large movements, thinking of complicated music, and hardly being able to hear yourself over an orchestra. Opera is something that is seriously neglected in popular culture, especially in the U.S.
I'm my environment I am always exposed to music, art, books, engineering, and education. It is part of my family. I go to school at the Orange County High School of the Arts. All my friends are involved in the arts and we all appreciate each other's art forms. I know I am experiencing a very isolated case of such openness. I would like to at least allow other people to give opera and other classical music a chance. I'm not saying that every one will like it, but I truly think that to be able to be a music lover of any kind you have to have a respect for the foundation of classical music. After all, my favorite music is rock, my favorite band is TOOL. But I am exposed to classical music all the time and it only helps me broaden my knowledge of what I love.
Please listen to what I sing and don’t just listen to my voice. Weather you like my voice it or not is not as important as the music. Maybe if I can show some examples of what some 17 year old girl can do other people will want to see what a real professional can do. Just go see an opera. It can only broaden your musical horizon. Or better yet do some research and find an opera that you think you would enjoy and see it. Allow yourself to respect this enduring art form.
