..
Hi, my name is Alex. I recorded my debut album in my bedroom and released it on my own label on 1 October 2007 and lots of things happened. I have done sessions for Radio 2, 6 Music and XFM Scotland and got lots of nice reviews and also radio play on Radio 1, Radio 2, 6 Music, XFM Sotland, BBC Radio Scotland, Forth, Northsound, Leith FM and recommendations in The Sunday Times and features in things like The Sun and one of my songs "I'm On the Right Side" is also playing out the end credits to the new Dan Myrick film (Blair Witch Project), Solstice, curently on release in the USA. I will be on tour with my band over and over again through 2008 and I am very excited about that. I also hope that I will be playing some festivals this summer. I have been shortlisted to do a TBreak gig for T in the Park which should be good also. Previous gigs are all on my website but there are a lot of them and previous support slots include Oh Laura, Sandi Thom, Mull Historical Society, Jim Bob and Acoustic Ladyland
There is a wicked remix of my single "My Word What a Mess" by a genius producer type and you can listen and buy it here
You can buy my album anywhere, it's even available from Tesco and Asda would you believe (online) but the best bet is HMV or Zavvi or iTunes or Napster if you want to download it, although I think the physical copy sounds a lot better than mp3s. I've recently seen the album on a load of file sharing sites too, and I'm not sure what I think about that yet. It's sort of tricky - it obviously spreads the word, but then I make no money from a lifetime of work, leave it with me and I'll form a proper view at some point before I die
It's also here of course...(basically it's everywhere and if it's not in your local shop tell them off)
I am having a proper website built with videos and things: www.alexcornish.com It isn't ready yet though - will be up soon
There is also a brilliant school called Timsbury School (see the Alex Cornish Project friend below) and I am their school project for 2008 so make sure you befriend them and say hello on their page
Anyway, thanks for looking at my page. I write stuff in my blog from time to time so be sure to subscribe and check back so you know what's going on
bye for now
alex
press:
I was in session on the Dermot O Leary show on Radio 2 on 17 November. You can listen again on Dermot’s Radio 2 page and to the cover of the theme tune to the Littlest Hobo... Also listen out for the second single, ‘My Word What a Mess’ being played on the show...
My second single, 'My Word What a Mess' was released as a download only on Monday 3 September and was featured in the Sunday Times on 2 September as one of the five hottest downloads of the week: "...haunting melodic pop from the Edinburgh newcomer"
'Why Alex Cornish isn't signed to a major label and being flown round the world in a big jumbo jet drinking champagne is beyond me' – Tom Robinson, BBC 6 Music - Alex was in session for Tom on 15 August and both singles have been played repeatedly on BBC 6 Music both daytime and evening shows
'This is amazing' [debut single] and the album is 'wonderful' - Jim Gellatly, XFMScotland. Alex was XFM's showcase artist week commencing 8 October - the whole album was played, two tracks a night, all week. Both singles have already been repeatedly played over the course of the last few months
“In the absence of any discernible musical talent, the dream for any music critic, especially at fanzine level, is to find that most elusive of things, which is an artist nobody else has heard about so you can proclaim them from the rooftops triumphantly. After years of searching and false starts, I’ve found him. Ladies and gentlemen, meet Alex Cornish – the man I’m putting my money on to be huge...he has created one of the best albums I have ever heard” - Tasty Fanzine
“Cornish is a bright songwriting talent with heaps of potential” - Music Week
“The album is an absolute belter” - Edinburgh Evening News
'This is a truly brilliant album, I defy you not to love it, go out an buy it - 10/10” - The Beat Surrender Fanzine
'Surprising myself, I've discovered that it's really worth putting the time into this record. It may not be my sort of music but fuck me, he can really write a tune. There's a little twist in each song that is eminently sticky and eventually I found myself letting the songs slip, one by one, past my normally immaculate angsty indie-snob defences' - Song by Toad Fanzine
'...a thing of beauty, a work of total pleasure, a genuinely superb debut [album]...divine' - ToxicPete Fanzine
‘Cornish has carved out a tune-packed and memorable debut…a DIY gem’ - Is this music? Magazine
“Alex’s music has power, grace and a depth of emotion that one doesn’t always find in pop songs” – Matchbox
One of Alex’s songs is playing out the end credits to the new Dan Myrick film (of Blair Witch Project fame), Solstice, distributed by Miramax and released in the UK early in 2008
Songs from the debut album have also been played on BBC Radio Scotland, Forth 2 and Northsound (as well as repeat plays on BBC 6 Music, XFM Scotland and BBC Radio 2)
Alex was featured in the arts supplement in the Edinburgh Evening News on in July 2007 and also the Scottish Sun in October 2007
“Alex has the kind of press quotes that most DIY artists could only dream about getting, but this would mean little without the sterling quality of the work, which thankfully is as good as the press he’s generating...a polished talent” - Record of the Day
And on it goes - weeee - The List gave it
3/5 and Drowned in Sound a healthy 7/10. Have also had a feature in
the Edinburgh Evening News and the Scottish Sun!
You're welcome! I'm sorry this comment was delayed. XD I was takin' a shower. Lol, well I hope you get better! Colds do suck...specially if you sing! Get well soon!
Damn! Just got this message now! Ahh well =[ But I walked into Stuart Wilson last night and i was saying that i was going to come a see you tonight but i had money issues. But we kinda decided that we are both going to come and see you next time for sure!
Wow! String Quartet? Won't make it tonight, I've already got tickets for Ailie Robertson but really keen to catch up some time. You got any other plans for gigs this the summer?
Sorry dude! I'm not gonna be able to make it tomorrow. I completely forgot that its my little brothers birthday and I never got him a present so i'm going to have to spend my cash on him =[.
Was teasing about the spam/advert(if that's what you want to call it). I was in Cab voltiare a few weeks ago and my feet were sticking to the floor. Could you ask them to clean it?
Hello! Yes some tunage soon would be a great plan. I'll see if I can make it down on Friday. I am after all a little addicted to string quartets. What time do you kick off?
