I am a guitarist based in western New York state. My primary role in the music world is that of an instructor. For more than twelve years, I have been teaching people of all ages with diverse interests. This has allowed me to become proficient in various playing styles. I have earned a Bachelor's of Arts degree with a concentration in "Contemporary Guitar Studies" from Empire State College. Outside of mainstream education, I continue to learn all I can about music; such as my prevailing interest in music from around the world. Approximately ten years ago, I became involved with Guitar Craft. This has allowed for even greater personal improvement on the instrument and understanding of working in a group.
Regarding my views and methodology towards instruction, the aim is for the student to develop the ability to learn how to play anything they want/need to play...basically “how to learn”. Within this, my propensity is to focus on how one would play what they’re going to play and why a song or musical phrase sounds as it sounds.
Tools to strengthen our playing would include: developing the physical, learning the fretboard, and ear training. Certainly songs provide us with excellent examples of ’what is going on’.
For lessons, I can be reached through a couple of locations.
I teach on the east-side of Rochester (Brighton) out of my home. Based on my current schedule, I am not actively looking for more students at home....but, things change. One can contact me through myspace or my website: Alex Kelley dot Net
For more than eleven years (beginning in October of 1998), I have been instructing students in the village of Webster, NY. Aside from the official website, an official MySpace page has been set up for the store. I can be found there Monday through Friday and Saturday. One needs only to contact me for further information.
A substantial boost to my ability as a player and instructor...I attended my first Guitar Craft introductory course in April of 2000 and my first week long Level I course in September 2000. The following winter, I flew to Italy for a Guitar Craft Level II course. Various other work followed, including a three month stay in Atlanta for a Level III course that included performance and recording as a member of the League Of Crafty Guitarists.
The website for Guitar Craft contains a complete calendar of Guitar Craft and related courses and events and complete contact information for Guitar Craft worldwide.
