Alexis Harrington's Interests
|
| General | Fine, not necessarily expensive, red wines (know your vintners), all things Victorian and Edwardian, collecting china, poking around in old houses (would LOVE to see the Biltmore Estate), history, setting an elaborate dinner table, collecting good writing intruments like Waterman fountain pens, or good gel ink pens, stationery, books, music, the American West, Trivial Pursuit, word games and Jeopardy. Oh, World War I, and on the occasion of a friend's death, a few good-sized shots of single malt Scotch. | | Music | A vast range from Beethoven, Mozart, and Chopin, to Guns 'N' Roses (not sure yet about Velvet Revolver), early Elton John and Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen (a major writing influence), The Chieftans, Tom Petty, Celtic trad, Glenn Miller, Gershwin, AC/DC, Eagles (especially Seven Bridges Road!), George Thorogood, Pink Floyd, Bon Jovi, Nirvana, movie soundtracks, Salty Dog by Procol Harem, Dropkick Murphys, Wilco, Waylon Jennings, various shape-note singing groups, and when I'm writing, that kind of mindless elevator music you can buy from displays that play samples in places like Target. | | Movies | Cold Mountain, The Illusionist, Forrest Gump, Raising Arizona, Fargo, The Pianist, Independence Day, O Brother Where Art Thou, Almost Famous, Brokeback Mountain, The Green Mile, Lonesome Dove, The Shawshank Redemption, Giant, Rebel Without A Cause, Life With Father, Auntie Mame, Ed Wood, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Titanic, Braveheart, Gladiator, Last of the Mohicans, Legends of the Fall, This is My Father, House of Mirth, Romeo & Juliet (Zefferelli 1968 version) | | Television | Breaking Bad (yessss!), Frasier reruns, Myth Busters, Deadliest Catch (also yesssss!), The History Channel, The Simpsons, King of the Hill, Alpha Satellite (programming from Greece in Greek), Emeril. Guilty pleasures: Ren & Stimpy, I Love Lucy, really OLD Popeye cartoons (1930s) and any Warner Bros. cartoon made up until the mid-1950s. | | Books | Just about anything written by Stephen King, the Harry Potter series, the Outlander series, Angela's Ashes, A Farewell To Arms, All Quiet on the Western Front, The Observations, Lonesome Dove, A Garden of Sand, Gone With the Wind, Hummingbird, Trinity.

Alexis Harrington's Blurbs |
About me:
. . . and my work. I am a self-employed working novelist, with 11 books published over the past 14 years. Of all the books I've written I've had just one foreign sale, and that was THE IRISH BRIDE, which was translated into Norwegian, where I understand it was a big hit.
I am also make jewelry and I'm a fine needlework artist, specializing in embroidery, thread crochet, and sewing. I love to cook, read, entertain friends, decorate, and pursue various crafts. The books I sell to NY publishers, the needlework directly to my customers at my website.
I live in the Pacific Northwest near the Columbia River, still within 10 miles of my old high school and my mom. I have two cats, a 100-pound dog, two finches, and three chickens who all seem to want to be in my small office while I'm trying to work (except the chickens). Getting up to step around them is like maneuvering an obstacle course, but they are my children and so dear to me. My hours are kind of goofy--I'm just not a morning person and tend to be up late when the rest of the world is sleeping--and QUIET. No phones, faxes, distractions. Just the kids and me, candles burning, and the elevator music coming out of my CD player.
Before I made the leap to full-time writer, I spent about 12 years working for consulting civil engineers. Riprap, anyone? How about a nice detention pond?

Who I'd like to meet:
Anyone interested in romance/women's fiction, and who wants to learn about my creative projects and talk about theirs, or their other work.
And someday, before one of us is snatched from this earth, I'd love to meet these people. They have either inspired my own work, impressed me with theirs, favorably impacted my life, made me think, performed brave deeds, or any combination thereof:
Bruce Springsteen,
Stephen King,
Captain Sig Hansen,
Jon Bon Jovi,
Frank and Malachy McCourt,
LaVyrle Spencer,
Stephen Hawking.
(Captain Phil Harris was also on this list, but it was my great pleasure to meet him in June 2008.)
