Me! I produce a lot of my own stuff for kicks, which means I also play all the instruments: guitars, mandolin, banjo, bass, piano...
But I play often with others and the following folks have played on a few of the songs here: Ian Doerr (producer/guitars), Paul Redel (guitars), Jennifer Schmidt (vocals), Evan Hutchings (drums)
My upcoming album will include some of these songs in addition to great musicianship on other songs from: Isaac Taylor (fiddle), Mean Mary (banjo), Nat Rufus (vocals--a duet!), Heather Moulder (honkey tonk piano). Despite the plethora of amazing musicians playing on it, the album is going to be quite stripped-down and personal, just the way I like it. ;-)
I am also IN bands besides my solo 'act'. Good Luck Ola is a piano/guitar/tambourine duet: Heather Moulder and myself. You'll hear from more from us come the end of the year--when we hope to deliver to you only the best down-home music-a-meals we can cook up. Believe me, you will love it!
And my other band is with Ian, Justin, and Tim. If the Americana scene had its own sub-genre of indie rock, it could take us in as its red-headed stepchild. We are just enough country, just enough folk, and just enough something else to make your feet twitch and your heart itch. We are recording our album and, let me tell you, it will be amazin'! We have named ourselves Mine That Bird.
Influences
The strangest things influence me. It can be anything from a car ride to a friendly conversation to an art history lecture. I try not to let any of my favorite music influence me too much, but I'm sure it does. So here's a list of my favorites:
Hank Williams, The Velvet Underground, Jenny Lewis, Willie Nelson, Simon & Garfunkel, Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Lou Reed, The Doors, Patsy Cline, Dwight Yoakam, Johnny Cash, Neko Case, Camera Obscura, David Bowie, Janis Joplin, Emmylou Harris ...those are the major ones, I believe.
And more recently, I've been listening to these astounding musicians/groups: Mother Mother, Brooke Waggoner, The Pretenders (Break Up the Concrete), Cat Power
I've also been influenced by: comic books, various episodes of The Twilight Zone, sex, several printmakers, my childhood, my teenage years, silent films, art films, good books, news/media, my cynicism, my sarcasm, interesting people, church signs, and road signs
Sounds Like
No glitz. No glam. None of that fluffy stuff. Just me, Alexis. Judy Garland meets Johnny Cash!
Genres: Pop Grass, Americana, Folk, Indie, Alt Country.
Some folks I've been compared to (or at least categorized with): Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams, Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Neko Case, Jenny Lewis, Allison Krauss, Gillian Welch, Patsy Cline, Patty Griffin, Stevie Nicks, Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, female Johnny Cash, Joan Baez, Brandi Carlisle, Nancy Sinatra, Norah Jones, girl version of Bob Dylan
It's been called beatnik bluegrass, pop-grass, folk noir, y'allternative... but it's folk. Folk or Americana. And just like everybody else spews names of other artists to help describe the music he or she (or their band) makes, I will tell you that mine is... well, Johnny Cash meets Judy Garland!
And why the name? Well, I like to hear people say it.
Please, enjoy.
