"We were particularly impressed with Alex J. Hughes' performance in support of his EP, "Perfect Stranger."... Hughes played through the rain to an appreciative, enthusiastic crowd"
-Current In Carmel, July 2009
"I love to hear a new song and pick it apart and relate it to my life," explains Alex J. Hughes, an aspiring songwriter from Bloomington, Indiana. "I look for the deeper meaning in the song," he continues. "I love how certain songs have the power to bring back vivid memories and how music can become a soundtrack for our lives."
For Hughes, music is a critical-- even necessary-- element of life. Many people take music for granted as a dismissable part of their daily routine, but Hughes sees its deeper connection to our collective consciousness. He sees music as fundamentaly inseparable from humanity.
Hughes was inspired at a young age to pick up a guitar by close friend and fellow musician Justin Branam, and the two subsequently began performing together at youth community events. "I didn't take my guitar playing very seriously until I was almost 17 years old, when it took on a new life for me," explains Hughes. "I was put in a situation where all eyes were on me and I thrived on the experience. I love being in front of an audience and having an impact on them through music."
After that experience, Hughes expanded his efforts. "I started to write my own songs and take a stab at singing," he says. "I love songwriting, especially from a lyrical standpoint, which I think is my strength. The idea of being able to put my thoughts and stories into songs for people to hear really fuels me." Hughes' songs are deeply personal, honest and real. "I draw inspiration for my songs mostly from personal experiences: I wear my heart on my sleeve and put it all out there for anyone to hear."
In early 2009, Hughes traveled to Nashville, where he recorded his debut EP, “Perfect Stranger.” The EP, which was produced by Jeff Pardo (Sonicflood, Denver and the Mile High Orchestra, Josh Wilson), will be self-released by Hughes in the spring of 2009.
"Ultimately, my goal is not to sell a million records or make money; I am happy just being in a position where I can write music and pass it on for others. I hope to impact as many people as I can with my music and give people something they can relate to."
