HELLHOUND BOARDWALK Sept 2007
Now I had seen the name Hellhound around recently – that’s it, they are one of my myspace friends and believe me they sound awesome on that. Like the headliners (Strongheart) they are a hard-rockin three piece that feature seasoned musicians Janson Ward (Drums); Mick Shedd (Bass/Lead Vocals); Alex Oliver (Guitar/Vocals) who deliver a set that mixes classic rock; Southern Rock with elements of bands like Mountain, Molly Hatchet and even Van Halen.
They are in your face with their full-on style and have a crackin set that features original material of numbers like the instrumental ‘Gypsy Dance’ that gives them a vocal breather; ‘Son of the night’ that reminds me of Hawkwind (Chronicle of The Black Sword era with Huw Lloyd Langton on vocals) – nice solo Alex! or the controversial ‘Like Politicians’ that are mixed in with splattering of covers that include ‘Sunshine of your love’ amongst a few others. They go down great and are a perfect direct support to Strongheart – no wonder they are supporting at Grimsby.

See HellHound play an Alex Oliver thing called Magnum Anger in this vid:
I've taken many electric guitar techniques and applied them to the acoustic having done the opposite for decades. Inspiration comes from whatever life presents me with - but I still look to Hendrix amidst all the John Martyn, Joni Mitchell and Pepe Romero that is of course rounded out with Baroque and Romany flavours. At my core i am filled with humility, yet i still gaze at the heavens and want to explore them, bring them to any who will listen. But can I achieve that? Doubts nag me and all I can do is hope that the responses I get at gigs mean that I'm not a tuneless, worthless copyist. Looking forwards to a return to the Ecofest and Rotherham Show this year as my solo/acoustic exploits become more rounded. In recent gigs, I'd actually involved so many guests I'd left no time for myself which may seem self-less - but it doesn't best please those who came to see me. Alex, the mad electric guitarist who proved you can play meaningfull blues on a pointy Washburn has now taken up the acoustic and even some slide.
That said, there's no reason why a solo artiste shouldn't take up a Stratocaster which as my recording attest, is quite do-able
PEACE
Alex
