Hailed as Björk’s male heir by his fans, innovative electronica musician Alex Romero has single-handedly crafted his own style of music. His unique sound is a fusion of various genres ranging from trip-hop to Afro-Cuban music, incorporating mashed samples, prepared guitars and more traditional instruments. While citing influences from an eclectic group of artists such as Boards of Canada, Portishead, Alice in Chains and even classical composer Debussy, he stays cutting-edge by always keeping an ear to the latest mainstream trends. The result is a distinct sound with a flair of pop.
Romero is at heart a sensitive singer/songwriter who only wears the armor of an extroverted big-beat maker. A close look at any of his songs will show the painstaking care he takes to ensure his songs remain melodic and catchy while never compromising the poetry of his lyrics. Reminiscent of Bjork and Tori Amos, his vocals are characterized by signature quirky warblings with unusual inflections which he often allows to break into a booming, brassy tone.
His debut album, Melodrama is a self-produced, warm indie recording that is destined to become a rare, hard-to-find gem as his career and sound inevitably become more polished and progress to greatness. In Melodrama, Romero grounds experimental electronic soundscapes with strong, provocative lyrics and traditional song structure. The album covers various themes, progressing from witty tongue-in-cheek songs about past loves to poignant and heavier existentialist broodings. It has received raves from fans and critics alike, and currently plays at various New York nightclubs.
