Alexander Sack is a fine arts guitarist. He utilizes the electric guitar as a solo instrument, using fingerpicking to refine it for classical, blues and contemporary compositions. He is the two-time winner of the Randy Rhoads Memorial Award as well as the twice recipient of the Andres Segovia Award for Classical Guitar Performance.
Alexander studied music at Los Angeles Valley College and California State University Northridge, receiving his Associate of Arts and Bachelor of Music degree. Alexander received his Master of Fine Arts degree from California Institute of the Arts, where he pursued composing for the solo electric guitar.
Alexander hails from Arleta, one of Southern Californias spiritual hotspots and cultural stomping grounds. As a 9 year-old Alexander asked his mother, an opera singer, if he could get a guitar. She agreed, picturing her son as Andres Segovia in a tuxedo. However, he pictured himself with lots of long hair wailing on electric guitar to mobs of screaming fans. His style has evolved to become a hybrid of the two visions. While he was formally trained in guitar composition and performance at some of Californias finest schools, he attributes much of his style to his experiences playing in the real world, and learning to play it as he sees it.
In 2002 Alexander developed a group of pieces titled Blvd Music I, II & III. These pieces reflect time spent playing on the sidewalks of Ventura Boulevard. There he used passersby as test subjects, learning what music made people stop, take a break from their hurry, and listen. Ultimately the Blvd Music pieces echo the sounds, the spirit and the stories of the city streets. From these street sessions Alexander also wrote Poontango, which he dedicates to fellow solo guitar player Michael Champdelaine.
In 2002 Alexander also composed a set of works titled Obsolete Graces, which he performed in various settings, including with a dance piece choreographed by Colin Connor and danced by Debra Noble. Alexander has played guitar music as an accompaniment to a number of theatrical pieces.
Alexanders current project is called BBQ Music. Once again, this music reflects real experiences Alexander has had performing in the Southern United States. There he develop a love and respect for the people he calls BBQ People. They are those people who Fear no FATS, Fear no SUGARS and Fear no PORTIONS. In other words, people who appreciate great foods and have the love and patience to smoke their meat for hours, spending the whole day making sure that they have made the best foods possible. BBQ Music is music written for those people. BBQ music can be listened to in any setting, but it is best listened to while barbequing or enjoying some rich and delicious, slow cooked BBQ food.
