Bio
ALFA is a folk-pop singer & songwriter whose smart lyrics, raspy voice and catchy melodies have been unofficially dubbed, "hydraulics for the heart." In 2012, Music Connection Magazine placed Alfa in their Top 25 Music Critiques, noting, "fans of Ingrid Michaelson and Sara Bareilles will savor this artist." Alfa's music has been heard on MTV and recognized by the New York Songwriters Circle. Most recently, Alfa is completing her 5th album, "World Go Blue," a melody-driven collection of autobiographical songs inspired by her move to Los Angeles in 2011. The songs from this Kickstarter-funded project navigates complex but universal themes, from lost innocence to the restlessness of being a 20-something, and the hope that exists despite life's ebb and flow. Alfa will tour in support of the album in Spring 2013 (see Calendar for dates). Alfa has performed throughout the US, in colleges and venues including The Shrine in LA and Lincoln Center in New York. Her approach to songwriting is influenced by a background in classical music and Filipino folk. Alfa was born in the Philippines and raised in the New York City area, where she began piano and violin studies at a young age. After years as a violinist in the Children's Orchestra Society in Long Island, NY (a non-profit founded by Yo-Yo Ma's father, Hiao-Tsiun), Alfa taught herself guitar and began writing songs at age 13. After enrolling in NYU to study International Relations, Alfa began to play regularly at downtown venues like The Bitter End and The Living Room. Post-college, Alfa took a job as a newspaper journalist, covering lifestyle and entertainment for Northern New Jersey and hosting a short-lived local music web series. But years of reporting on other artists did nothing to quell her own musical passion, and in 2011, Alfa left to pursue music in LA. The rest… as they say… is her-story.
