bands we like are Muse, Radiohead, System of a down, A perfect circle, Tool, Rammstein, Evanescence, Guns and Roses, Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, Pendulum
We are a song writing team looking for musicians, producers and/ or songwriters to collaborate with on a 4 or 5 track E.P. which will be presented to the head of A.R. at Polydor Records at a showcase on the 24th of september. So we are in a bit of a hurry! At present we are simply bass and vocals which is obviously quite restrictive. Right now we are relatively open minded as to how the finished product will sound BUT here are some guidelines to read before you get in touch.
How in the world did we get a showcase with Polydor with such unfinished songs? Is probably what you're thinking. The reason is that I have been invited to a showcase purely as a vocalist through a site called 'Starnow.' However, the organisers have assured me that they are always going to be more interestd in original material thank singers performing covers. Furthermore, as they already like my look and my voice, Ive already got one foot in the door.
This oppurtunity was presented to us not very long ago- hence why the recordings sound like they have been done in a hurry! However, we know that the musicians out there will be able to see potential in the most basic of demos.
We are looking for a guitarist and drummer to join the band as well as someone to produce it and we are interested in collaborating with any songwriters out there who feel they ahve something to contribute to our sound. However, we will only require you to commit to making the E.P. at this stage. Drummers will be at a huge advantage if they have an electronic kit at their dispoosal and knowhow to work smaples and loops. Guitarists- only the heavy and filthy will do. (see bands mentioned for an idea of what we are looking for).
These songs are simply ideas at the moment. We are very flexible and if you think you could come up with a better melody/ structure/ chord sequence etc. then please feel free to do better! We just figured that it might help to let you know some of the bands we are into and how we envisage the finished products might sound.
We enjoy bands such as Tool, Nine Inch Nails, Muse, Radiohead, System of a Down, Rammstein, marilyn manson etc. Not that we are trying to sound exactly like any of them but I thought this information would be useful all the same. These bands tend to have certain things in common however. They are all quite eclectic, very musical and melodic- heavy by commercial music's standards yet still very commercial in their own alternative right.
I would describe the sound we want to create as commercial alternative. Not cheesy pop, rnb, emo or indie but not heavy metal/ white noise either. We envisage a slightly industrial sound (Nine Inch Nails/ Rammstein) but with beautiful melodies (Radiohead/ System of a down), interesting instrumentation (Muse/ Tool) with a decadent, theatrical edge (Marilyn manson). We just want to make songs we think sound awesome- and hopefully enough people will agree that we make money!
Instrumentation can be anything from drums, bass, guitar to full orchestra and we are open to using a mixture of 'real' and electronic sounds.
Our lyrics often have a dark, often sexual twist to them
We enjoy music that has a dramatic/ theatrical feel to them
Despite saying all this we are still open to new ideas!
Another thing to point out is that these songs were recorded on a very modest budget and in a very small space of time and are NOT perfect at the moment. Of course we will record them properly when we know exactly how the songs ae going to sound and exactly what the lyrics will be and therefore how the song should be performed.
'Liquid Lover'
This is the only song with pretty much finished lyrics. The song is about comparing an alcohol addiction with a destructive relationship with a lover. The 'feel' of the song is dark, dirty, a little dangerous and will hopefully make the audience want to 'grind' with their boy/ girlfriend rather than jump up and down. This song was semi-inspired by 'Closer' by Nine Inch Nails. Although relatively fast it has a slow sensual feel because of how the drums work. For the end of the song we envision a poly rhythmn. We think possibly a slightly industrial sound for this one. The vocal performance will be vital for this song as so many emotions are present.
p.s. we have a music vid in the pipeline for this one already!
'Come'
The inspiration for this song actually came from listening to a few of the more popular songs by a band called 'Pendulum'- who are drum and bass of all things! lol
We wanted to create a song that will make the audience go mad! The intro is very much a build up exploding into a riff that we envision will be full of energy- possibly even double time on the drums, going into half time for the 'breakdown'. We think the ending should be reminisent of 'Hysteria' by Muse, with the instruments getting louder and fuller, ending in a huge high (hence the top D on the vocals). The lyrics are placeholders at the moment but the theme of overcoming fear to invite exciting changes into your life will stay the same.
'Fairytale'
This is somewhat of an experiment! The lyrics are entirely placeholders and will be completely different depending on where the song goes. We wanted to write a song which was melody oriented and different to what were used to writing. We arent sure where we want this one to go to be quite honest. We arent sure whether it should just be a simplistic ballad such as 'Hurt' by NIN or something with a bit more of a beat such as 'weak' by Skunk anasie or something more epic such as 'Play Dead' by Bjork or even heavier such as 'Mutter' by Rammstein. We cant wait to see what you think it should sound like.
p.s. We have another version of this song which is 200bpm and 6/8!
Un named
Just an idea at the moment with no specific chorus or bridge. Just an idea! Perhaps you can give us some inspiration as we havent worked on this one much yet.
So there you have it! We hope yu like what you hear and want to collaborate with us.
Our numbers are 07738 366290 (olivia) and 07790 300271 (Nick)
P.s. Not wishing to sound negative but PLEASE do not contact us unless you are very enthusiastic about the sort of music we want to make. We have had dozens of applications from the likes of 50+ jazz saxophonists, 15 year old indie fans and die hard 80s rock fans...dont waste your time if you aren't sure you are going to enjoy the collaboration.
Furthermore we arent interested in hearing from anyone who isn't as serious about this as we are. We are not interested in 'jamming' then playing some local gigs. We have been given an awesome oppurtunity that any band would kill for and we aren't going to waste it!
I foJund this wenbsidte that shoYws who has a cruVsh on you and thYought you'd wManna know that one of my friLends had ofne on you. You goAtta tsry itA!
If you'd be so kind as to pass this comment on to everyone in your friends list (including this bit!!!) that would be muchos appreciatos!
This gig means a lot to us - if we win, it's probably going to be our big break! So we need all the audience we can get. Come along! There might even be some interesting surprises, but you won't find out unless you come.
