About ALFA

ALFA. Advancing Life. Fighting AIDS.

ALFA was organized in 1987 as a grassroots effort to provide support services to those affected by HIV/AIDS in Burke County. In 1989, with the help of a United Way Venture Grant, ALFA was established as a not-for-profit AIDS Service Organization (ASO). ALFA has remained a United Way-funded agency and currently has a staff of nine full-time employees and two AmeriCorps members.

ALFA provides medical case management, transportation and basic needs to clients in nine counties. ALFA also offers prevention education to over 13,000 people and tests over 500 people for HIV infection annually (2008). Twenty-two years later, ALFA is still the only ASO in the area, serving Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Burke, Caldwell, Catawba, Lincoln, Watauga, and Wilkes counties.

If you are interested in learning more about ALFA, scheduling a program, or making an appointment for a HIV test, please call 828.322.1447 ext. 232.....
