Alfonzo is a four piece band from Portobello, Edinburgh. They formed a few years ago and have recently signed with Glasgow based D Set Records. They are currently making their debut album with award winning Scottish producer Jim Sutherland. Alfonzo are Daniel McGeever (Vox, Keyboard), Mikey Cook (Guitar), Chris Cook (Bass), Andrew Innes (Drums). Alfonzo have gigged in the main venues around Scotland and with the likes of Snow Patrol, Doves and Feeder. The first single will be coming soon, with the album to follow next year.

Sporting a T-shirt that said "Porty Says No Superstores", lead singer Daniel McGeever sounds a bit like Roger Daltrey, minus The Who frontman's mic-swinging antics, whereas his band come across as a hybrid of Jimi Hendrix, Jane's Addiction and Led Zeppelin. A few riffs have been pinched from said bands, sure, but such was the high-level fun factor no-one really seemed to mind. Stories For Today, a song about "living in the city", showcased the band's tightness to Scrooge-like perfection, the odd Elvis Presley and Frank Zappa lyric thrown in for good measure. While later on McGeever's pal - looking like the lead singer of the New York Dolls - waltzed onstage to take up additional vocal duties on a piece of 70s-rock that would make even Primal Scream green with envy. There was a good atmosphere inside Henry's, and the venue added to the occasion. Simply put, the cellar bar is the perfect rock-show dive: dark, dingy, smelly, a low-ceiling and a good sound system; you can see the whites of the performers' eyes, and not since The Venue closed down has a venue captured the essence of what it's like to see a good rock band up-close. During the last twenty minutes, McGeever was leading the audience in a call-and-response chant, as guitarist Michael Cook (a dead ringer for former Stone Roses' six-stringer, John Squire, in both looks and playing style) played the tune-up-the-guitar-song. Some of the best B-sides Oasis and The Who never recorded stormed by, the band's funky, four-minute tunes having an agreeable effect on some boisterous punters who danced wildly throughout their set. Indeed, as Alfonzo rampaged to a thunderous end, McGeever and company must have contemplated a few extra beers before turning up to work the next day with a stinking hangover, such was the success of this, their (surprisingly) first gig in Edinburgh for over a year. If they all pulled a sickie today, then they thoroughly deserved it.
