About ALGAR-next show july 7th-Athens Limestone Library
Some of the most major and powerful musical forces in the last century have spurned out of places where art is either suffocated or repackaged & homogenized to the point of unbridled panderment. Nirvana is the most pivotal example of evolving from, well, nirvana; Out of aberdeen washington, where the towns' chief economic exports are logging, alcoholism and patriarchal suicide. But there is also Black Sabbath and Judas Priest hailing from Birmingham, England. While no means a small town, at the time of these bands respective geneses it was nothing more than glorified living quarters for the dozens of factories dominating the landscape. These places evoked a deep sense of desperation from those who found enlightenment in the sonic deliverance of music, whose backs were proverbially against the wall as they struggled to keep themselves afloat while watching everyone else slip into "Domesticide"-a term coined by punks of the original American Hardcore Punk movement, quoted by Bill Reeves of Random Conflict (randomconflict.com as well as the American Hardcore book and documentary)
Now the annuls of history have come to reap their vengance once again. This time with ALGAR. Coming from a place (once) known as "The Bedroom City" because "Everybody sleeps there, but nobody really lives there." -(Kaye Jackson-Kindred, @ various points throughout the 1980s and early 1990s) The phrase seems to stil apply, despite what some consider progress. But while the city sleeps, an underground revolution is @ work, not unlike the microorganisms that come out to play while the human body rests.
ALGAR has existed in some form or another since the mid-nineties (with one major name change). The sound of the band is evocative of and very reminiscent of hard rock bands of the era, as the band were star graduates of the Post-Grunge Boot Camp. As the years passed however they began to retroactivate influences from various points throughout history. From Sunset-Strip metal to both British Invasions to the early-nineties funk metal explosion, gangsta rap, pop music from a range of decades, and everything in-between. Being from the southeastern United States only further exacerbated the Primus influence on the band, as many of Les Claypool’s characters seemed to exist in the flesh here.
The sound of ALGAR is broad and schizophrenic. “On Top of Montesano” is what would happen if John Fogerty wrote a song after a night spent @ The Amityville House. “Blood N’ Fangs” is an A.F.I./Misfits/Offspring-inspired punk number inspired by the film “Dog Soldiers” but carries a deeper subtext on the topic of personal anguish and relationship failure. (Not to mention the drum snippet of “Walk This Way” by Aerosmith hidden cleverly within.) “Crushed Velvet Lining” bears the scars of brainwashed conformity and religious overbearance, with a melancholy-yet-dynamic sound of lush, twinkling, cascading guitars, an articulated and jazzy bassline that stakes its own rights to the musical foundation, and a drumbeat that ?uestlove of The Roots would be proud of. “Hey Mauhn! Strut” is a funky instrumental. As 89.3’s WLRH DJ Brad Posey describes it “Parliament Funkadelic on cough syrup” (The Invisible City with Brad Posey 02/20/09 broadcast. Wlrh.org), and blatantly demonstrating the aforementioned Primus influence.
"Using no way as way, having, no limitation as limitation"-Bruce Lee. (citation needed) This is the basic philosophy of ALGAR. By allowing their collective influences, experiences and personal beliefs and philosophies to all be funneled down into the incubation chamber of true art, the band has achieved what so few in today’s marketplace have; a unique sonic identity in which every song is truly crafted to ensure each is unique in it’s own right, and the listener is never bored with the musical journey they embark upon with ALGAR. Cut scene from "HEAD". Jack Nicholson sez: "If you're a headless horseman or know someone who is, be sure to set your watch before morning, or suffer the consequences of a vengeful infinite universe!"
