Born in the historic 9th Ward of New Orleans in 1959, Al Frisby grew up smack dab in the crossroads of many of America’s musical styles. Some of his influences are..... Fat’s Domino... Professor Longhair... James Carol Booker... Charles Brown.. Erma Thomas.. The Meters... The Wild Tchoupatoulas ...Earl King... Frog man Henry ...Snookes Egland...Clifton Cheinner...THe Balfa Brothers..and Johnny Adams ...just two mention a few.
Since leaving New Orleans in the 1980’s he has thrilled audiences in the West and developed a new brand of musical comedy that is all his own.
“In the fine tradition of the jester, Al Frisby takes our sacred cows and makes burgers out of them.
An accomplished multi-instrumentalist (guitar, accordion, Turkish saz, harmonica, musical saw and more) and a social satirist Frisby loves to poke fun at the town he loves – Santa Cruz.
Frisby moves easily from reggae (“I and I been oppressed and hungry. My trust fund check didn’t come last Monday.”) to polka (“if you know that meat is murder, don’t disappoint the Fuhrer, ‘cause Hitler was veggie, don’t you see.”) to show tunes (“Somewhere Over the Rainbow” on the saw).
With a 60-song repertoire, Frisby will someday share his dinner table in heaven with Frank Zappa, Weird Al Yankovic, Mark Russel, Bette Midler, Alan Sherman and Tom Lehrer.”
