Rainbow Trout: three-piece rock band, based in Manchester, North West England.

***review of rocking chair EP***

If Queens of the Stone Age were British, then they'd probably sound like RAINBOW TROUT. The Manchester charm-with-balls trio are making a name for themselves locally with astounding live shows that leave people raving about them in Facebook statuses for weeks afterwards.

The Rocking Chair EP is their opening gambit and gives you an indication of what they're good at, good old fashioned rock music with an eye for seduction. Singer/guitarist Olly combines soulful singing with aggressive deliveries as and when required, and the results are engaging to say the least. 'I Love You Too' is an instantly catchy number, with a hook kicking in from the first drum-beat both simple and effective. It's a perfectly crafted happy-slap of a tune – nice-to-their-mother sweet on the surface, with a bite that takes them well away from saccharine.

'Maybelle' is a classic rock tune, in the way that The White Stripes make classic blues music. 'Pinstripe Blues' provides a break from the rock whilst the band blow smoke rings through an almost jazzy, tender little number that I'm trying not to call funky, but it is. 'Black Cat' is one of the more ferocious moments; moody and menacing, with layers of guitars, build up and some of the most stirring outright rock noodling present on the EP.

As a three-piece RT work well together; they are triangle of pure talent, clearly great musicians who work well together and produce something that could never be written off as derivative. Accessible and innovative as they are, Rainbow Trout are a band to watch out for - they'll lure you into the moshpit with their irresistible rock ethos, whilst slaying your girlfriend with a knowing wink and some seductive singing. (9/10 - Whisperin & Hollerin)

***live reviews***

"... make the comeback of Led Zeppelin seem like a pointless exercise... RT succeed by keeping things loud, visceral, yet packed full of infectious tune-smithery. At their most aggressive, they almost veer off into Queens Of The Stone Age territory. Yet, at their most tuneful - as on EP Rocking Chair - they give Kings of Leon a run for their money" (Manchester Evening News)

"... one of Manchester’s most talented new bands... Consisting of only frontman / guitarist Olly Smith, bassist Gaz Evans and drummer Steve Haughton, the trouts delivered a wall of valve-sound rock the likes of which Free and Led zeppelin would have been proud... a set of finely crafted tracks... the crowd’s appreciation for the neo rock rennaisance and high level of musicianship on stage was obvious" (SSR, In The City, live)

"... QOTSA style music... a ferocious sound with a nice front. Rainbow Trout are that breed of rock band who manage to be good natured as well as loud... good tunes – they could certainly prove popular in the future" (Whisperin' And Hollerin', MAPS Festival, live)

"Winnebago Deal-style bass and drum assaults, topped off with amazing solo licks" (Sandman, Hi-fi Club, Leeds, live)
