A associação do tempo à música teve sempre por base dois aspectos antagónicos, o do envelhecimento e perda de criatividade na composição musical e o do amadurecimento e aperfeiçoamento da capacidade para compor de forma criativa. Felizmente para os Alla Polacca, e ao fim de quase uma década de existência, eles enquadram-se no aspecto mais positivo. Ou seja, tempo significou um percurso de aperfeiçoamento e o atingir de uma consistência sonora. Algo bem patente neste seu primeiro álbum, editado sem recurso a qualquer tipo de colaborações e exclusivamente seu: “We’re Metal And Fire In The Pliers Of Time”.

Fazendo uma retrospectiva situacionista e poderemos verificar que, ao longo da sua carreira, os Alla Polacca sofreram várias alterações no seu alinhamento e, também, que essas mudanças tiveram sempre impacto directo na sua musicalidade. Basta ouvir as três edições anteriores para se perceber isso, com os registos sonoros a variarem entre o ambientalismo, a melancolia e algumas explosões rock no limiar do psicadélico. As entradas e saídas de membros traziam, para o seio da banda, uma certa indefinição criativa. Mas apesar das oscilações a essência/conceito base estava sempre presente e era quem mantinha o equilíbrio e apontava a direcção correcta. E, apesar de alguns desvios, os Alla Polacca conseguiram encontrar o rumo certo e fazer com que as suas canções soassem àquilo a que eles se propuseram: rock ambiental e experimental com uma forte carga emocional que balança algures entre as sensações primaveris e outonais.

Aquilo que agora nos apresentam, com “We’re Metal And Fire In The Pliers Of Time”, é uma peça musical elaborada e criada com base na naturalidade. E esta naturalidade suporta-se numa gestão simples e bem conseguida entre a sua criatividade de sempre (a tal associada ao rock ambiental e experimental) e uma nova faceta, o de serem espontâneos e não se inibindo de explorar novas sonoridades mesmo que isso, por vezes, os leve aos limites do absurdo, como sucede em “They..ll Do Without Us”. No entanto uma absurdidade que soa a ingenuidade (para não dizer infantilidade) e que acaba por nos transportar para os estranhos mundos imaginários que existem dentro de nós. Algo igualmente latente em “The Cold (Doubt)” ou na beleza surpreendente de “Last Day”. As mudanças são significativas e parecem aproximar-se mais de universos habitualmente equiparados aos dos Sonic Youth. “Kings Of Winter” e “The Lie (Conspiracy and Anticipation)” são um bom exemplo, primando pela exploração do experimentalismo em sintonia com a típica estrutura base da canção rock de contornos mais alternativos.

Os Alla Polacca soltaram-se e fazem com que as canções deste “We’re Metal And Fire In The Pliers Of Time” soem a sinceridade. Nada é forçado ou manipulado. Tudo nasceu da cumplicidade entre um grupo de músicos que, quando juntos, soltam o melhor de si sem qualquer tipo de pudor. E quando assim é o resultado final só pode ser consistente e agradavelmente criativo. Tudo o que se espera da música.

The idea of time in music always grounded itself on two antagonistic aspects: getting old and losing creativity vs. maturing and perfecting the ability to compose music in a creative way. Happily for Alla Polacca, and after almost a decade into their existence, they fit on the positive side of the equation. In other words, time meant for them a perfecting path in achieving a certain consistence to their sound. This is quite acknowledgeable on their first album released under no type of collaboration, the exclusively theirs “We’re Metal And Fire In The Pliers Of Time”.

Going back a while on a “situationist” retrospective we can see that, during their career, Alla Polacca have suffered several line up changes which invariably had a direct impact on their musicality. To understand that, one needs only to listen to their three former releases, which range from ambient forms to melancholy soundscapes and occasional rock explosions on the verge of psychedelia. The coming and going of band members brought to the core of the band a certain creative indefinition. Nevertheless, the basic essence/concept of the group was always present, holding the equilibrium and pointing towards the right direction. This way, after a few digressions, Alla Polacca managed to find the right route for themselves and make their songs sound the way they set them out to: ambient, experimental rock with a strong emotional charge that balances somewhere between vernal and autumnal feels.

What they present us now with in “We’re Metal And Fire In The Pliers Of Time” is an elaborate musical piece, with a natural feel to it. This easiness is supported on a simple and effective balancing of their usual creativity (the one linked to their experimental ambient rock sound) and a new feature, spontaneity, which brings them to explore new sounds, even if that search leads them, at times, to the borders of the absurd, as in “They’ll do without us”. It is nonetheless an absurdity that sounds like ingenuity (even childishness) and ends up taking us to strange imaginary worlds that exist inside us. The same thing is equally felt in “The cold (Doubt)” or in the surprising beauty of “Last day”. The changes are significant and they appear to head towards sonic worlds usually associated with Sonic Youth. “King of winter” and “The lie (Conspiracy and anticipation)” are both good examples of that, excelling on the exploration of experimental methods in accordance with the typical basic structure of the alternative rock song.

Alla Polacca let themselves loose and make the songs in “We’re Metal And Fire In The Pliers Of Time” sound sincere. Nothing is forced or manipulated. Everything grew out of the complicity between the band members who, when together, let the best of themselves pour out without any kind of constraint. When that happens, the end result can only be consistent and appealingly creative. Everything we can hope to get from music.
