The story of Zanglust has persevered through the ages to become a legend of downy softness proportions. His life became an inspiration to over a million ants. Our story begins at the Crustacean Circus, with the most renowned antcrobats of the time. The tragedy opens with Zip and Zap Lust letting their obsession with public fornication accidentally destroy their lives.
1. Acro(bat)/When I Hold My Breath, Like This!
Surprisingly, in this remote part of the world every creature was the same size; width, height, and weight included. Appearance actually made little impact on the citizens of this land, the land of Souplandia. However, there was still a firm class distinction, and at the time of our story a monarchy was ruling quite peacefully.
King Oyster Stink and Queen Crab Pants had just had a baby daughter, Princess Lobster Breath, and they were enjoying their first night out by taking in the Crustacean Circus. Souplandia was a very conservative land; polite, shy, and extremely strict about their morals. The ant couple Zip and Zap Lust were trying valiantly to contain their desire for public copulation. Copulation however, was not worth the fashionable punishment of death that was all the rage with the young and affluent. Zap was pregnant and very close to birth, but their show had to go on. Antcrobats were not allowed a night off. They’re act began normal enough, until out shot a baby from between Zap’s legs, and then in the confusion and joy of the moment Zip and Zap “joined”. The miracle birth was soon forgotten as the whole crowd looked on in disgust! They soon began chanting “put your pants on!” which was the signal for certain death. King Oyster Breath had no choice, and Zip and Zap Lust were killed by stinky sock suffocation. They desperately tried to hold their breath, but after 3 hours they expired, sending their souls into the buffet in the sky.
“This is Panda Bear with less obvious reference points, Adam Bentley and Jordan Mitchell venture into the great unknown and come back bearing all manner of gourmet audio. The remarkable news is that there is a full album of wide-eyed glee and its called ‘Surreal Auteur’, a moveable feast that will have you entranced from beginning to end…It’s at times like this that I find myself fighting back the tears at the beauty of it all. Music to ensure you never grow old.” –mp3hugger.com
"It’s just so delightfully abstract. While the tracks may have their own titles, there are no separate songs, really. The album is, more than music, an exploration of the secrets of the mind. Like that state between sleep and awake… this is music to dream to."
-Pretending to be Japanese
“Like a book, it's tough to get a full understanding of any song--or the whole album, really--by just starting off in the middle or only taking in the parts that seem easiest to digest. Allegories' power is held in the larger picture of things, not separable hooks and verses. If Surreal Auteur is a story, it's a sonic one, and every song has an important context within.” - The Needle Drop
“If humans could remember what it was like being born. and more specifically could remember what it sounded like, the first 30 seconds of Allegories' "Grass Toboggan" might be that sound. As it progresses from an enveloping of noise into a series of dazzling and sometimes overwhelming twists and turns, in an odd way, it resembles a microcosm of life. “ - The Walrus
“Hazy, gentle and drifting…twelve obsessively intricate dream-like soundscapes”
- See What You Hear
"Literally Brilliant...The duo's fuzzed-up faintly astral trance-rock is the sound of Brian Wilson if he'd never seen a surf board and been force fed a diet of My Bloody Valentine singles on 45 RPM with the volume turned down low. There's also the odd nod in the direction of the unfashionable yet quietly influential Talk Talk and the sparse, haunting sound of The Cocteau Twins." - The Devil Has The Best Tuna
"The recently released Surreal Auteur, the debut by Ontario’s Allegories is quite excellent. It helps you remember that time you were floating in the womb. Great soundtrack for hang-gliding." -The Decibel Tolls
"...there is something distinctly alive about this album. It seethes with natural sounds that are run through a prism that simultaneously divides and conjoins in an imperfect symmetry. There's a method and harmony to the nonsense. Surreal Auteur speaks a primordial language as beautiful as the first strains of people finding their tongues at the Tower of Babel." -Condemned To Rock n' Roll
