With several self-produced albums under his belt, Speak Easy has truly come into his own, with his songs being widely regarded as some of the best instrumental music with vocals ever made. Abandoned by his parents at birth, Speak was raised by robot wolves on the outskirts of a small Midwestern town, where he took a liking to raw meat and loud music. Unable to speak any conventional language, he was forced to learn to communicate through the collection of drum machines, old records, samplers, and synthesizers that he had amassed over the years. What begin as crude attempts at language eventually turned into his own brand of experimental, hip-hop-influenced electronica. Elusive by nature, Speak spends most of his time in his studio, churning out records that are equal parts Public Enemy, John Cage, and Rick Wakeman. His fear of other people prevents Speak from performing live more than several times a year, but his live shows have been known to confuse, inspire and nauseate, often all at once.
Funkdefy brings you THE DYNAMITES featuring CHARLES WALKER! January 25th at Ravari Room. Heavy Funk-N-Soul will be dropped once again in the CBUS. A show you must not miss!
Hosted By: FUNKDEFY When: Friday Jan 25, 2008 at 10:00 PM Where: Ravari Room 2661 North High Street Columbus, Ohio|36 43202 United States Description: FUNKDEFY
If the first attention-grabbing horn lines of The Dynamites evoke a dramatic curtain call from a late ‘60s funk concert at the Apollo Theater, it’s no accident. After all, that’s exactly where Charles Walker first cut his teeth as a performer. When the revolutionary ‘new bag’ now known as funk first made the scene, Walker was right there in the thick of it, opening for the likes of James Brown, Etta James, and Wilson Pickett, and imbibing himself in a cultural movement’s genesis.
Now he comes up from Nashville with the slammin and groovin sounds of The Dynamites to drop heavy funk and northern soul in Columbus. With Funkdefy on the tables to warm up the night, this will be THE show to start of the New Year. RIGHTEOUS!
Fellow Funksters, Hopefully you are aware by now that the greatest Ohio funk party ever is happening at the Ravari Room this Thursday, August 16th. This is, without a doubt, the biggest event that FunkDefy has put on so far, so if you've never seen us in action (or haven't seen us recently), then this is the show for you.
Funkdefy will wet your appetite with servings of funk 45s and heavy wax, but THE BUDOS BAND will be struttin in from Staten Island, NY to blow your mind away with psychedelic afro-soul ...
