"Birdwoman - gorgeously wistful." ROCK'N'REEL
" There's nothing at all loose or incomplete. If you want rough then this isn't your road, but if you want quality and daring in one take, look no further than Joe Louis Blues, which manages to cram in bubbling Scots overtones, slide blues lines, a big fat cheese of an organ and a vocal choral from Nakibembe in Uganda, at just over five minutes. She's got some chops this girl." FROOTS
"Out Of The Blue - a rolling, chirpy, acoustic slice of silent love." FREEFOLK
"Diving For Pearls - a high conceit marvelously executed." Q
" …. heartrending and haunting." THE SCOTSMAN
"I'm going to save the biggest thumbs up for Joe Louis Blues, wherein our heroine rocks out over a big fat cheesy organ sound and integrates a Ugandan choir. At this point she's left the smoky back rooms of the folk clubs far behind and distinguishes herself as a writer of tremendous depth and maturity." SIMON JONES
"Marguerita - the most hummable tune you've heard in ages." SPIRE FOLK
"Disillusionment tempered with optimism, sensitivity and poignancy without a trace of self-pity and with a purity of emotional expressiveness." ROCK'N'REEL
Allie Fox is a singer-songwriter, composer and acoustic guitarist who has been performing professionally and semi-professionally in venues throughout Britain for over 30 years.
In 2000 she released her acclaimed solo debut album 'Diving For Pearls' on her own label, Vixen Records, securing an exclusive distribution deal with Koch International and attracting major national media coverage and radio airplay.
'Diving For Pearls' was produced by Classical Brit Award winner, Iain McKinna of Offbeat Scotland in Edinburgh, whose production work has been described as "state of the art" by Ohm Magazine.
The album is a classic collection of Allie's "warm, accessible compositions" (Mojo) characterised by her "distinctive voice and meticulous guitar work (Froots), rich layers of vocal harmony, multi-textured arrangements and full-bodied production. With songs full of catchy hooks and well-crafted lyrics and a warm emotive voice at times reminiscent of the late great Sandy Denny, 'Diving For Pearls' is an eclectic album appealing to a wide audience, transcending genres and defying categorisation.
WAYLAND'S BLUES - THE FORTHCOMING ALBUM
Allie is currently nearing completion of her second album, 'Wayland's Blues', which is due for release early 2010. Working again with her producer Iain McKinna, 'Wayland's Blues' has been long in the making. Started in 2003, this is a purely instrumental album, featuring eleven tracks of original tunes and classic blues covers for acoustic guitar, a vibrant mixture of American, Celtic and classical ingredients. Allie's intricate guitar layers are blended with evocative arrangements for slide guitar (Rod Clements), harmonica (Fraser Speirs), acoustic steel-strung guitar (Frank Usher), nylon-strung acoustic guitar (Neil Warden), cello (Ron Shaw), viola (Ben Ivitsky), banjo (Pat McGarvey), pedal steel guitar (John Wardell), bass (Gavin Dickie), drums (Dave Haswell) and percussion (Iain McKinna).
Allie teaches guitar and singing and has become well-known for her music workshops, including for people with special needs. She has always enjoyed bringing people together through music and over the years has launched several successful live music venues, including the current String Jam Club in Galashiels which is now in its 12th year. In between her own composing and musical activities, Allie also runs the music agency Foxy Music as well as Fox & Fox Music International promoting the classical music of her late brother, Malcolm Fox, who died in 1997.
