ALMA Dance Experience, LLC is a group of professional musicians and dancers bonded in the study and performance of traditional West African Drum & Dance, Modern Dance, and most recently, Middle Eastern Drum and Dance styles. ALMA exists to celebrate dance and music, to bring dance and music to everyone, to celebrate the non-traditional artist, and to capitalize on the talents each individual brings to the group, to the stage and to the classroom. ALMA is also dedicated to collaboration; working with other artists to build a larger dance and music community.
ALMA Dance Experience has been a company since 2003, but the core of our group has been working together for a decade or more, and among our group members we have multiple decades of professional experience in a wide variety of music, dance, and performance styles. As a group we are committed to artistic excellence through continuous study, performance, and sharing of our art forms. Along with being dedicated artists, the members of ALMA Dance Experience are also working folks with families, jobs, bills, etc... Each member of ALMA makes sacrifices to be a consistent part of the group and to stay committed to artistic excellence.
ALMA Drum & Dance is our West African Drum & Dance performance group. We are blessed to have Yaya Kabo in our company, bringing leadership, friendship, and west african drum & dance technique instruction to our membership. ALMA Drum & Dance continues to perform and provide classroom & workshop experiences while we study and build on our repetoire. Learning together has always been the core of what keeps us going ~ community, artistic growth, and fun!
ALMA Modern is our Modern Dance performance group. ALMA Modern surged after a fantastic workshoping experience with Shelewa from "Movement for the Urban Village" from Brooklyn NYC. We owe a debt of gratitude to Shelewa for reawakening our modern roots ~ we've been choreographing, rehersing, and performing consistenly ever since that weekend, Shelewa ~ THANK YOU!
ALMA Drums - Community Drumming is our public drum circle that is currently meeting the 3rd Sunday of each month. Jan '08 thru June '08 we host this drum circle in the studios of Still Waters Yoga, in Monclova, Ohio (www.stillwatersyoga.com).
ALMA Dance Experience and Leyla & Lapis Lazuli (www.leylabellydance.com)forged a successful collaboration in 2006, with members of ALMA providing musical accompaniement for Leyla's dancers, as well as, a new dance collaboration between the two groups, forcusing on folkloric middle eastern dance and costuming, now performing under the name, "Raks Habibis".
ALMA is also committed to FUN, friendship, and peace!
ALMA not only performs regularly for the public, we also offer classes in west african drumming & dancing for young people and adults, provide workshops to a wide variety of local groups, run afterschool dance programs, present education programs as a part of the Arts in Education Project of Toledo Public Schools, and collaborate regularly with other artists in multi-arts events happening in Toledo, Bowling Green and Detroit.
