The guys below are one of greatest conga groups I've heard. The group is formed by the 4 Abreu brothers and the group's name is:
LOS PAPINES
They play the instrument whose rhythmic beat runs through my veins!
Picture yourself in a Carnaval, a Mardi Gras of sorts, following behind a group like this one playing, while you dance down the road behind them. When you tired, you'd step out and follow the next one. That was Cuba in the 40's & 50's - my parent's time. Each "barrio" or community would prepare a new song (conga, rhumba or guaguanco) along with a themed float. Sometimes the musicians would ride the float, others they would walk behind it, totting their drums strapped on their shoulders. The best song and the best float won a prize. It was great street party, the Cuban Mardi Gras, rivaled only by Brazil's. The Orange Bowl and Rose Bowl parades are similar, but Cuba's where held at dusk and ran through the wee hours of the morning and all the music was lively typical dance music. Some of the congas are still remembered today, like "La Chambelona." Those were the good old days.
