Poetry inspires me. And so does SEX. I’m also into Jackin’, ballet, techno, MYSELF....., short films, Opera, The King Of Pop, Fatherfucker, boy’s and girl’s groups of the 50’s & 60’s, dance clubs, Prince, photography, Daft Punk, the FUTURE, Sylvester.... New York City knocks me off my feet, i LOVE classical music, Vivaldi being my favorite composer and i get off on romance novels.
Asking you to pay attention, this unusual singer displays a sure sense of hook when he fuses his squeaky tenor, infectious pop melodies and cheeky lyrics with stripped down yet snappy electronic beats and, of course, the sass of it all is worth the attention.
Born in 1982 in Dakar, Senegal, Almamy started out as a dancer and an actor in his early teens, performing locally until he won a scholarship to study and dance in Paris in the late nineties.
After relocating to New York in 2002, to perform for the Peridance Ensemble, Almamy found himself immersed in the club scene and being the lead singer of BlueStar, an electro-rock band. "Ballet couldn't contain me anymore," he recalls. "I was becoming a songwriter, I was singing and going out a lot to dance clubs, to hear some cool electronic music". He also collaborated with various record producers, such as Peter McLean, Seren Ame and Mike Degen among others and worked, briefly, as a background singer for Pleade the Fifth Production.
Then, after a while, Almamy's focus was on developing his career as a solo recording artist. No more band or back-up singing. "It was time to perform my own creations instead of someone else's and be the star," he says candidly. And being an original Almamy decided to produce his records, with the mentoring and assistance of guitarist and producer Nick Holmes.
So with that airy and unconventional voice, those engaging and perky pop songs and edgy minimalism in his productions, Almamy created a sound he could call his own.
This self contained artist is also, unsurprisingly, a terrific performer, an entertainer who uses his dancing and acting background to bring his music to life onstage.
Almamy is currently working on his first album, it is called simply, "almamy."
