"The Darkside were good, but Alpha Stone succeed on a higher level. They take all the kitschy space-age trappings, lace them with nitrous oxide and wrap them around a foundation that alternates between a more stratospheric version of the Darkside's tributes to the swingin' '60s ("Special One" stands out) and reverberating space mantras easily good enough to compete with Spectrum ("Astro" tunes in, turns on and blasts off). Several years after the collapse of 'The Darkside', Pete Bassman formed a band that he hoped would be the antidote to the rising number of mediocre cock-rock acts in the Rugby area. This would be a re-awakening to the heady, post-psyche days of the mid-eighties. But this time round, the sound that was created held more of a sparkling, wide-eyed wonder to it rather than the nihalistic junkie ethos of a decade before.
Recorded with a kind of glorious 3D sci-fi pop edge, Alphastone jammed off into the cosmos and endured a heady seven year career. Being signed by Greg Shaw of BOMP! records, touring with 'The Silver Apples', signing to Enraptured records, providing the soundtrack to Domenic Dejoseph's film 'The Leafblower' and relentless gigging around Europe, the bands psychedelic daze came to an end in 2002 with Pete at the controls and bassist Andy Smith orbiting through to the end . Alphastone are back again in 2008 with a new album and live show.
