The Altamaha Scouts membership consists of people from Liberty, Long, Effingham and Chatham Counties in Georgia, but membership is open to anyone in the area interested in having a great time while recreating the life of a confederate soldier from the coastal Georgia area.
The Altamaha Scouts are trained both in Infantry tactics as well as both field and siege artillery drill as many of the coastal garrison units of the time were. At reenactments the Altamaha Scouts are strictly infantry, but when doing events at Ft. McAllister are required to do demonstrations on artillery for the public.
Enlistment is open to any male over the age of 16. Children ages 13 - 18 are welcomed in the unit as long as either their parent is a member, or a member agrees to sponsor the child. You must be at least 16 years of age to fall in and carry a weapon at most reenactments. Ladies and children under the age of 12 are welcomed to join the ranks in a civilian role.
The Unit organization is that of a military company under the command of a company grade officer (the Captain) with the rest of the unit being either NCO's or Privates. The overall organization is governed by a Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees control all use of the Company name, logos, website, and information contained on it.
