Hailing from Adelaide, South Australia, Altars is a four piece Extreme Metal band. Treading a careful path between ambient experimentation and blisteringly paced Death Metal, this uniqueness separates Altars from the masses. Incorporating these lush atmospheric textures and astral themes, the music that is Altars has previously been described as “ambience that takes no prisoners.” Whether directly or indirectly, through harsh brutality, or soaring cosmic soundscapes, Altars songs are written to draw the listener in, and give them an intense aural experience. The band insofar living up to their namesake – ‘Altars’ being taken from the Hebrew word, Mize’bah, meaning “to slay”.
Altars is
Cale Schmidt – Vocals
Lewis Fischer – Guitar
Jon Dewar – Bass
Alan Cadman – Drums
The origins of the band date back to 2005 but an established lineup wasn’t founded until mid-2007 with the addition of Jon Dewar (Sarsekim) on bass. Since formation, Altars has performed alongside Adelaide artists such as Tzun Tzu, Quasar, as well as Sweden’s Dismember on the Adelaide leg of their 2008 Australian tour.

“their amazingly catchy slime-laden hooks stick to the head like a starving leech… this is a promising debut by Altars.” [7.3/ 10] – Diabolical Conquest ‘Zine
“If this demo is any indication, Altars is a band that will continue to melt faces and engage minds as long as they continue to make music.” [8/ 10] – The Metal Observer
“The fact that this is still a band in the demo stages is quite staggering to me… They manage to take the foundation of the genre and just turn it right on its head… This is a fierce and experimental demo that shows a band with a truly promising future in the world of death metal. [4/ 5] – Unbound ‘Zine
“Death Metal in the atmosphere of a short walk while in the eye of a massive typhoon spiralling overhead...” [7.5/ 10] – Unholy Cult ‘Zine
“Their style is very unique, mixing brutal death metal with ambient sounds, very experimental, but that does not make their sound weak. This demo cd has 5 songs, about 24 minutes of madness” [8.5/ 10] – Reborn From Ashes ‘Zine
“a self-titled demo that is fit for a full-blooded album release. It is a definite old-school death metal affair, big ass vicious bass and all the way aggressive, yet at the same time it is what you would expect extreme music to be in the year 2008 -- daring and ultimately powerful.” [5/ 5] – Chronicles of Chaos Webzine
