We don't all believe the same things.
We do, however, realize there is much to learn together and that this world needs more than typical churches have to offer. It needs people committed to living the teachings of Jesus and to demonstrating the love and compassion of God.
While many "emergent" communities have embraced trends and progressive externalities, our foundational theology and approach is neither derived from fundamentalism nor conservative evangelicalism. Our focus is primarily the kingdom of God (Jesus's main message), not intellectual adherence to dogma. Accordingly, we are non-creedal and reflect the following presuppositions:
- The bible is not
perfect. It is not inerrant, infallible, but invaluable for us as 21st century Christ followers seeking to better understand our roots. We don't toss out the scriptures but we don't engage in bibliolatry either.
- Women are not inferior or somehow subservient to men. Men and women are regarded as genuine equals here.
- We are an inclusive and affirming group. We realize the issue of human sexuality and orientation is far more complex than "bible believing" churches would like to admit.
- Modern science and other disciplines are incorporated into our pursuit of truth and knowledge rather than excluded or feared.
- We admire many early church communities, particularly before the era of Constantine, for their nonviolent witness and economic generosity. We want to be known, like they were, for our love. And that is most importantly what we seek to cultivate together.
- A pastor's role for us is primarily facilitatory. Any worship services ought to be regarded as secondary to our collective life together and daily faithfulness. Small groups, common meals, and other weekly occurences
are the church. It isn't something we do once a week or a building we attend.
