Influences
"Only what we manage to do lasts, what love sculpts from us; but what I count, my rubies, my children, are those moments wide open when I know clearly who I am, who you are, what we do, a marigold, an oakleaf, a meteor, with all my senses hungry and filled at once like a pitcher with light." -Marge Piercy

Hey there! Alyssa has a new website, and a temporary home (while she struggles desperately to understand html) - check it out at http://web.mac.com/hxquarter - lots of news about me on podcasts, plus all the other goodies that tend to appear on music pages. Enjoy!!!
A little something about me that won't go in the press kit: I am a self-deprecating, over-educated grammar-nerd. I love Tom Waits, obscure and arcane words I can use to confuse my enemies, rare books, whiskey poetry (see: Charles Bukowski), actual whiskey, being married, watching my 2-year-old sister learn to speak, playing the piano until my fingers bleed, full-contact knitting, my spandex superhero suit (despite its unforgiving nature in the hips), jumping out of planes (yes, really), cooking (no, not really - but can I substitute "eating"?), dreaming of flying machines, enormous dogs, Salman Rushdie, Rachmaninov and the smell of aging paper. I wish I lived in Salzburg, quit being so hard on myself, owned a Harley (and the guts to ride it), could speak fluent Italian (I'm working on it), and played professional poker. I consider among my influences (and heroes and mentors) Mr. Waits, Leonard Cohen, T.S. Eliot, Bruce Hornsby, Eric Whitacre, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Nelson Algren, Rilke, Tennyson and my father. Someday soon I will figure out how to use my new Mac and record the 12-ish new songs that have been sulking in the corner since I wrote 'em (ah, neglectful me). Visit my website at www.alyssahendrix.com or join my mailing list (send the word "join" to mailinglist@alyssahendrix.com) to keep up with the news. Oh - and I've started composing again. Mostly choral, for now. When I find 100 people crazy enough to sing my songs, I'll let you all know that too.
Stewart is still talking (and smirking) about Waits last night. he loves only Tom, buffalo springfield, bruce springsteen, and roxette. but mainly roxette...please tell me you're watching this. i want to roll around in his nerdishness right now. and i miss yours...xo.
FYI at this year's homecoming parade, Northwestern students lined Sheridan, wearing Colbert/Obama '08 t-shirts. sometimes I do really love our alma mater...
just a reminder of the "promise to try" you made on the phone last night...so great to talk to you...you'd better have remembered to vote today too! miss you. xoxo.
Come hear Alyssa on Sirius Satellite Radio, on my show on Channel 102 at 9:30...or you could hear the show now, for free, at The Jersey Toddshow or here
i love it. you have grown so much as an artist since i've known you...more recently it seems in leaps and bounds...i dare say even within the piece itself...miss you bunches...i wanna come visit. soon. xoxo
Dude...Your drummer wants back inside the circle! Holy crap! That's a great piece of music...keep up the outstanding work! If you get a chance...Jake and I have been doing some recording lately...I want you to come into the studio and track some vocal harmonies at Gravity...Say "YES"...you know you want to! C'mon! It'll be tickles and pinches!
The songs here sound great, and I can't wait to hear your choral and piano music. CONGRATULATIONS on your new life... there is nothing that compares to doing that which you love.
