Amanda Brown is a composer and musician. She began playing the violin in high school and was promptly banished to her mother's attic to practice, such are the tuneless scratchings produced on such a difficult and torturous instrument. Perseverance eventually paid off, and several experimental art house bands later Amanda joined one of independent music's most cherished bands, The Go-Betweens, with whom she was to spend the next four years touring and recording two albums, Tallulah and 16 Lovers Lane. Amanda's next band was Cleopatra Wong with drummer Lindy Morrison. They released two E.P's and became one of the first Australian bands to tour Asia. Sessions and guest appearances with other bands followed, including R.E.M, silverchair, The Church, Youth Group, The Vines, Josh Pyke and Toni Collette and the Finish among many others.
Hoping to age with some musical grace and dignity, Amanda realised that she couldn't work in pop music forever and decided to diversify in order to continue her musical adventures. She completed a music degree at the University of Western Sydney and a post graduate degree in screen composition at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School. Since then she has composed music for feature films Look Both Ways, Son of a Lion and Monkey Puzzle. Documentary projects include A Well Founded Fear, Mask and Memory - Sidney Nolan and Suburb 4 Sale. Television credits include music for the ABC ident campaign and The Secret Life of Us. Theatre credits include Stalker Theatre Company's Incognita, with an accompanying soundtrack album released through Vitamin Records. Her latest project was composing music for the Glenn Murcutt exhibition at the Museum of Sydney.
Amanda won the 2008 IF Award for Best Music for her soundtrack to Son of a Lion. In 2009 she won the APRA/AGSC Award for Best Music for a Documentary for Sidney Nolan; Mask and Memory. She was also nominated for a 2009 ARIA Award for Best Soundtrack album for Son of a Lion.
