I'm actually thinking about going to Anime LA as "Eraldo Coil"- doing the L face makeup and hair, but wearing the Noir uniform, the fedora and the sharp suit- I think L would be HOT in that. Keep some "business cards" ("Eraldo Coil, Investigator" or something) in my breast pocket to hand to people who ask what I am. Might be fun...
It's ironic, actually, that you'd say how devoted I am to the character. I never thought I'd say it, but I'm casting about a little here for a new cosplay. I was L before L was cool; one of the first L cosplayers in the states, I'd read the manga series before it even thought of airing on Adult Swim, and now it's tearing me apart that you can't move ten feet at a con without bumping into some lazy, barefooted cosplayer in jeans and a white shirt. I was the L that handed out donuts and pastries to my fellow L's at conventions. I bought black contacts, by God. These fools can't even bother to buy a wig as long as they have roughly shoulder-length darkish brown hair.
Well, when it got to the point that the only Death Note AMV at Mikomicon was booed by the audience upon announcement, just because people were so tired of hearing about Death Note, I decided then and there that Death Note had turned the mainstream corner of popularity that made it intolerable and that I needed to find someone else to go as. (It took about fifteen minutes to figure out that my next choice, Heath's Joker, would be even worse.) I went as Matt last con and people were pretty okay with that, but I can't do that often cause that would be stealing my best friend's cosplay. ;) Well, now, who do we go as in the wake of this gaping hole? It's awful, you know, I just noticed I was touching my thumb to my lips trying to think of someone else.
Anyway, I think my admission of you as the best L was less of just complimenting and more of stepping down from my mental pedestal, ceremonially putting a successor on the throne who'd look well after the name, a sort of official letting go of the title, you see? Treat it well.
