Yours truly plays piano, organ, bass, guitar, mandolin and banjo and also sings.
At the moment I'm not working with a fixed band, but my favorite collaborators are:
On vocal:
Gordon Gatherer, Eb Davis, Nina Davis, Kat Baloun, Clarissa Hechavarria...
On saxophone:
Roby Edwards, Tina Tandler, Willie Pollock, Jörg Miegel
On trumpet:
Don Marriott
On harp:
Kat Baloun, Marcos Coll, Sugar Blue, ...
On guitar:
Jay Bailey, Heinz Glass, Jenn Burleton, Jan Hirte, Sven Ramrath, Adrian Costa, Tom Blacksmith...
On bass:
Bernd Kuchenbecker, Carlos Delalane, Edward Maclean, ...
On drums:
Sebastian Trupart, Andreas Bock, Mark Rich...
I guess this eclectic collection of musicians reflects the eclecticism in what I'm doing...
Influences
It's really hard to pinpoint where I picked up most of what I'm doing, but there were people that I listened to more than to others. They might have zip to do with each other, so I don't know if they qualify as bona-fide influences. They're just people that I picked up a few licks from. Now here goes:
On piano:
Dave McKenna, Jessica Williams, Otis Spann, the stride & boogie folks...
On organ:
Some Jimmy Smith, some McGriff and some Larry Young pretty much covers it...
On bass:
Lotsa Larry Graham there, some Aron Burton, and on fretless I love me some Jaco... of course, I can't play that fast!
On guitar:
Albert King, Steve Cropper, Buddy Guy and some Hendrix bits (ironically, I love his ballad approach the most!).
On mandolin:
Andra Faye McIntosh got me to take up the wee'un. And except for some Jimmy Page-style stuff, that's that.
On banjo:
This is way too much of an ancillary skill to write anything about.
Sounds Like
Put all my favorite music in a blender and spin. Fast. Pour the result into a cocktail glass, sit back, relax, enjoy!
