About a Melodic Daydream {NEW MUSIC AVAILABLE 10/13/09}
You know, it's funny how life works out when you finally end up on the right path and find your place on Earth. Writers, philosophers, religious leaders and great minds from the dawn of time have called it fate or destiny.
LnZ Kayd and Chris Newton, who together compose the heart and soul of an inspired, passionate band from Colorado known as A Melodic Daydream, well, they prefer to call their journey to find each other and their music the quirkiest word in the family of ‘fate' related words: Kismet.
It's a word that perfectly captures the current state of their lives together as a couple, as a family and as working musicians. Nobody could have predicted they'd end up together as a family or as a band. Their band name - A Melodic Daydream - is simply an extension of the kismet aspect of their lives together.
"Our name just really encapsulates what we do. We're both dreamers, and we hear our dreams in a melodic nature, so it made sense," LnZ says. "Chris and I live within many melodic daydreams."
On the surface, the story of both LnZ and Chris' life together and their music together should never have been written. They have a decade age difference, they come from very different backgrounds, and on a musical level, their tastes couldn't be further apart.
LnZ started out in professional musical theater which then led to intensive opera training and performance at which point, after performing for seven solid years, she says she, "gave it all up...there came a point when performance became too much pressure for me. Singing had always been my outlet, but I had yet to discover how I could truly make the expression my own. I'd spent years mastering other people's music."
While LnZ was evolving into an undiscovered musical creature, Chris was making a name for himself in Atlanta as a guitarist. After a string of rock bands that played the Southeast and Midwest U.S., Chris played on albums and performed with some big names in music. At 25 years old, Chris, just like LnZ, "gave it all up" and moved back to Colorado, which set him directly on the path to the chance meeting where Chris would meet LnZ and form a bond that would forever join them as lovers, parents and band mates in A Melodic Daydream.
Three months into their journey as a couple, they were blessed with a baby, who they named Jaxon, and who LnZ and Chris proclaim to be "the very glue and inspiration for our music, family and life together."
Up to that point, Chris had no clue that LnZ was a talented songwriter and singer, until one day while Chris was working on a song in the studio. He asked LnZ to sing a part, as he says, "Just for fun," and it turned out that "everyone was blown away by her singing."
They decided to try writing a song together, and in the process they fell into their musical journey together as A Melodic Daydream. Four studio releases later, they're poised to release their fifth album. Titled "A Little Weird," it is, like all their music, an autobiographical musical snapshot of LnZ, Chris and their son Jaxon, wrapped up in an ambient, soulful, honest package of music they both say is "guided from above."
A Melodic Daydream is fiercely proud of their strong DIY ethics, which encapsulates thier label and publishing company. In addition to the upcoming release of "A Little Weird," LnZ and Chris are also producing a project under the name of "When Do You Give Up?" The side project is a kind of online-based social experiment that will culminate into a book and documentary film in 2010.
As working musicians, parents and soul mates, Chris and LnZ believe their son and their music together answer that age old question of "What is the meaning of life?"
"Each song starts with a small spark and explodes into a vision," Chris says, not realizing that his thoughts on songwriting perfectly captures how he met LnZ, how he became a father and how they founded A Melodic Daydream.
For LnZ, the amazing journey to find their place in the universe is a gift she says they treasure as a family.
"We didn't plan this, and everything that has happened has been kismet. Music has become our life, but it was our life that somehow created the music. We are blessed to be able to share our dream together as a family. It's a very special bond that we are immensely grateful for. We eat, breathe and live music as a family."
No matter what tomorrow holds for LnZ and Chris, it's sure to be filled with family and music.
"Music is the heartbeat of our lives," they both say. "It's running through our blood. Our music is an extension of our lives, our passion, our pain, the joy and the struggle. It's the story of our life, our love and our future. Nothing, not even Kismet is perfect, but we know that we are lucky to be riding this rollercoaster together, no matter where it takes us."
Over the past two years LnZ and Chris (of Colorado based band a Melodic Daydream have been working on a project in conjunction to their musical endeavors. Were asking one question, with no wrong answer. The question holds a different meaning for everyone. Whether it relates to love, work, relationships, dreams, children, addiction, health, finances etc., the question has been asked and answered by all of us over and over.
