AmeriCorps South Alabama ERT's Interests
|
| General | The AmeriCorps Pledge
I will get things done for America -
to make our people safer,
smarter, and healthier.
I will bring Americans together
to strengthen our communities.
Faced with apathy,
I will take action.
Faced with conflict,
I will seek common ground.
Faced with adversity,
I will persevere.
I will carry this commitment
with me this year and beyond.
I am an AmeriCorps member,
and I will get things done.

AmeriCorps South Alabama ERT's Blurbs |
About me:
In 2004, the U.S. Government declared 68 major disasters in response to hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires and flooding. In the past decade, there have been nearly 600 Federal disaster declarations, including natural disasters and terrorist attacks.
We understand that disasters are often compounded by a lack of community preparedness and a disorganization of valuable resources. Much of the devastation associated with disaster situations can be dramatically reduced through greater public awareness, organizational collaboration and effective community involvement. Our highly skilled, trained members are vital resources that address these important challenges.
ERT members focus on both critical life safety needs in a disaster and on meeting recovery needs. Members are on-call 24-7, and can be deployed for up to six weeks at a time.
ERT members are trained in safety and preparedness, as well as in CPR and First Aid.

Who I'd like to meet:
In a country where the frequency of disasters has doubled in the last ten years, there is a growing need for trained individuals who can not only respond to the needs of citizens in the wake of a disaster but can also help to mitigate for future events. The SAAC ERT is a multi-functional, rapid deployment team of trained members who will be available to respond to floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, terrorist attacks, and various other types of disasters throughout the continental United States. The SAAC ERT was modeled after the St. Louis AmeriCorps ERT that has been responding to disasters and conserving natural resources for over 12 years. The SAAC ERT consists of 20 members who will each receive an intensive orientation including: physical conditioning, team building and leadership skills, introduction to disaster services, operations in hazardous environments, dealing with people in crisis, risk management approaches, Incident Command System, emergency communications, volunteer and donations management, chainsaw operation and maintenance, conflict resolution, and basic emergency medical care.
