About me:
There was a time when the press was known as “the fourth estate”. Journalists were coined as such to illustrate a new system of checks and balances on the government; one that would serve the purpose of keeping all members of society rightfully informed. That system worked until the introduction of yellow journalism, spin, and media conglomerates. The time-consuming task of knowing who to trust has become one that is overwhelming for the majority of Americans.
If the press is the fourth estate, consider Ameritocracy.com the fifth. Ameritocracy is a community forum made up entirely of user-generated content, founded to make social and political information more accessible and credible for the masses. By encouraging users to engage in educated debate using facts and sources, Ameritocracy gives an invaluable opportunity to the millions of Americans who don’t have the time or resources to cut through the noise themselves.
About how the site works: Users submit brief quotes from politicians, pundits, and other sources that they may find questionable or confusing. Once quotes are submitted, members of the community can write brief responses to those quotes, citing sources in their responses. The responses can be supportive or challenging; they can also give context to that quote so that people reading the quote for the first time can be informed quickly without having to dig for that information elsewhere. Sources are always cited, and can be challenged as well.
The community then rates the statement for two things: credibility and relevancy. Credibility is gained or lost by politicians depending on how users vote after reviewing quotes and the challenging or supporting statements made by the community. Users can also gain credibility over time based on their responses and sourcing, which is decided upon by the community alone. The relevancy rating helps rank how important certain issues are to the community.
