Why are we needed
On May 29th, 2003 the Jakarta Post reported, maternal mortality in Indonesia is 373 per 100, 000 live births, the highest among the member states of ASEAN.
According to the in-depth study, "Maternal Mortality in Bali, Indonesia" done by Dr. Inne Susante, Dr. I.B. Asawa and Judith A. Fortney Ph.D. (in cooperation with School of Medicine, Udayana University, Denpasar Bali, National Family Planning Coordinating Board, Family Healthy International, NC, USA), the maternal mortality ratio was 718 maternal deaths per 100, 000 live births. The study found that postpartum hemorrhage was the leading cause of death, accounting for 49% of the maternal deaths. Hemorrhage is largely due to malnutrition. The economic conditions currently present in Bali increase the risk of pregnant women eating less nutritious food, and getting fewer meals per day.
Families under financial strain are less likely to seek prenatal care and risk assessment for their pregnant members. Doctors and midwives are finding women of compromised health presenting themselves in labor, having had little or no prenatal care, poorly nourished and at greater risk for complications during delivery, for both mother and baby. Our organization sees patients and care providers daily and perceives an urgent need for educational and birth centreal projects to address the problem of increased maternal and infant risks due to Balis current economic crisis.
The economic conditions in Bali have added stress to the lives of pregnant/ postpartum/ lactating women, infants and their families. This is a group that previous to the October 12th 2002 bombing tragedy, were already at risk.

A new birth clinic in Bali
If one million mothers donate $1.00 and then each pass this story on to all the mothers they know and they each donate $1.00 and pass it along to all the mothers they know, we will reach a million mothers, raise a million dollars, and have built a birth clinic one mother at a time.

Miracles can be simple
Please join me in creating a blessed miracle. It's very simple ... 100% of every dollar spent will go directly to funding the purchase of land, building and supplying the new clinic and buying a much needed ambulance.
Who I'd like to meet: A Million Mother's and friends also that are interested in supporting the Bumi Sehat Clinic in Bali rebuild a much needed facility.
Tsunami to Terrorism, Balinese Culture Crippled -- Rising Malnutrition
In 2002 and 2005, following the devastation of the Tsunami in Indonesia, terrorist bombings in Bali led to the collapse of the tourist industry, resulting
in economic devastation, mass poverty, and malnutrition on the island. As a result, poorer families cannot afford to go to a hospital for birthing, so they have their babies at home. This is usually a safe alternative for birthing a baby, however when mothers are malnourished and they give birth, there’s a far
greater chance that they will tear, and without proper medical attention, the mother can bleed to death, which explains the high maternal mortality rate in Bali today.
Hope Exists For Mothers in Bali
In 1999 Midwife Robin Lim set up a birth clinic for underserved women to receive prenatal care, as well as to birth in a safe, compassionate environment. To learn more, please visit the website of Yayasan Bumi Sehat (www.BumiSehatBali.org).
Bumi Sehat started out by helping 50 mothers per year have access to a safe place to birth their baby. In 2007, the number of births jumped to 600, and projections are 750 to 800 births in 2008 with the same number of staff and facilities. Based on the numbers of women that come for prenatal visits every week (currently over 125), 2008 has already stretched them beyond maximum capacity.
No woman is ever turned away at Bumi Sehat.
Join my heart and a Million Mothers hearts ... one million hearts strong ... to build a new clinic in Nyuh Kuning Village ... mother-to-mother across the world manifesting safe and proper care for mother and babies in Bali. Check back here for weekly updates on our progress.

Dear A Million Mothers: Thank you for YourFriendship. My eight-year-old-peace-activist son Axil's quest for World Peace Before 2021 is gaining momentum! I'm so proud of him. Please embrace him AND his song "World Peace Before 2021" which he sings beautifully. His performance can be seen on MySpace, his webpage www. worldpeacebefore2021. com and/or YouTube (by searching his name Axil Kollist.) It is my intention to post a new video of him singing his song every few months so people can watch his talent grow as impressively as the momentum for his quest! I'm sharing two photos with you. The first is of my son distributing his free world peace bumperstickers and the second photo is of him singing his song “World Peace Before 2021” at Maui's Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Day Festivities in January 08. Best regards, Axil Kollist’s mom

your welcome, I was happy to do it. my husband and I have been spreading the word about this cause. I really feel for these women, I myself just had my baby five weeks ago in the best conditions (although she was 7 weeks early) and believe every mother on the planet should have the same.
