Ami Williamson is one of those rare female singers. While her roots are firmly in the tradition of singer/songwriter, her richly diverse upbringing had Ami taking the stage not only in opera and classical, but also touring with her father, country music artist John Williamson. Ami is now focused on her song writing, performing her own compositions in a one woman show at music venues and events such as The Woodford Folk Festival.
Ami is a graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music where she studied for a Bachelor of Music with a voice major and worked closely with pianist and accompanist David Miller. Prior to that Ami gained a Diploma of Acting at the Ensemble Acting Studios under the direction of Hayes Gordon. Ami’s versatile talents were first developed at her school, The McDonald College of Performing Arts, where she studied jazz, tap, music and drama and came third in the state for HSC Music. Her repertoire has spanned diverse styles including jazz, pop, country, traditional folk and early music to classical recitals and opera. Ami has appeared as soloist with the Sydney Chamber Orchestra the St Lawrence Orchestra and the Australian Youth Opera. Other performances include Iolanthe with Opera Australia conducted by Richard Bonynge, the co-productions Requiem and Carmina Burana at the Sydney Opera House with the Australian Ballet and State Opera of South Australia. Ami has toured nationally with her father, country music star John Williamson, performing her own material. She has recorded for 2MBS-FM, ABC Classic FM and ABC Radio National as well as performing on Channel Nine’s A Current Affair, Hey Hey It’s Saturday, The Midday Show, Burkes Backyard and The Today Show.

Songbird Ami Williamson at home in Epping.
AMI Williamson not only shares her country music father's name but also his penchant for writing great Australian songs.
The daughter of John Williamson took out Parramatta's Mars Hill song writing competition last month.
Performing three original songs, which included Big Moon, I Got a Dress and A Song For Wendy, Williamson won the judges over with her honest look at life.
This honesty has been poured into A Song For Wendy, an emotional piece about the death of a close friend.
....It seems to be one song that people react strongly to,'' she said. ....People have come up to me and said ..that song brought tears to my eyes'.''
Growing up with a father who is an icon of Australian music has left an indelible mark on the singer/songwriter.
....I guess the fact that I had music around during my childhood was a big factor as to why I'm doing what I'm doing,'' she said. ....It feels very innate, organic and in my blood and it is only getting stronger as I get older.''
Williamson said she only came to realise her father's fame after some schoolyard bullying.
....I guess I became aware of his music when I got knocked at school. Some of the other kids would change the words of True Blue to something crass.''
As winner of the competition, Williamson will head into the recording studio and have an EP of two songs released.
