Like oldtimey and much jazz, and have a lingering fondness for punk rock, usually in the form of Nomeansno... Tho' the Ex are a darn exciting band, too, and Chris D. of the Flesheaters has a helluva voice. | | Movies | John Cassavetes, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Peter Watkins, Ingmar Bergman -- like that. I enjoy the occasional horror movie, too. | | Television | I do not watch television. | | Books | My favourite novel remains Robert Stone's DOG SOLDIERS. I went on a big Patricia Highsmith kick last year (everyone should read DEEP WATER, a neglected masterpiece; plus it's got snails in it!). About me:
In Vancouver, I've written for the Skinny, the Nerve Magazine, Terminal City, Discorder, the Georgia Straight, and (no I'm not gay) Xtra West. In the US, I've had pieces in Razorcake, Punk Planet, Skyscraper, and Bixobal. I've had articles on punk bands appear in Japanese and German translations. I've also done one thing for The Wire. Many of the people I've written about are in my friends section.
Tastewise, I'm a cinephile and a fan of improvised music (though I retain a great fondness for the punk rock of my youth). I teach ESL by day and sometimes bookscout on weekends, and I'm decent with a curry. I spent some time in Japan. I have a blog at http://alienatedinvancouver.blogspot.com. As I type, I am listening to Borbetomagus Live in Tokyo.
