Last august I wrote an art statement, about making works with short lives. My thought was: some people have short
lives, some have longer lives. We're always preserving; ourselves, and the art we make. But eventually a painting crumbles down to dust as well. Just like we do.
And our civilization, and our planet.
Realising that, I decided to start painting on salty plastic and wood, found at the seaside, on rotten wood, on bark, etc.
That reduces the lifetime of a painting.
It might live 20 years, 10 years, 2 years...
If someone chooses to own such a painting, they would want and try to extend the lives of such a painting, by keeping them dry and in a show-case. Or just watch it fall apart.
I did not only use old materials though. I also collected glass, stones and tiles. The painting 'Life cell' 2008 is 4 x 3 cm; a baby, painted on half a pumice stone. An egg or a cell, or even half a cell, with a baby in it.
Back in august, I wondered if I would make even smaller works in the future. I did not paint at all at that moment. All I did was meditate. My life felt as my art work. My spirit was my only work of art, and I realised it might be the biggest and most important project of my life.
Because a spirit will be around longer than the best preserved piece of art.
I predicted, when I would start painting again, it would be about life, death, the now, growth and spirits.
It was all open, 'like a blank canvas', I just waited what would happen.
Now it's january 2009.
And, as I sensed back then, I am indeed painting about life, death, the now, growth and spirits.. The works are smaller and the people on it are younger then ever.
It's only babies. This project has been exhibited in Amsterdam, Realisme 09 and will now be shown in the Gallery, starting february 21st. For opening hours, go to Jacoba Wijk Gallery
