Ok, so I think I've just had a breakthrough on the LED front: So the same guy who made the Cubatron at Burning Man, now sells a product called Triklits, which are strings of addressable LEDs that you can drive off a computer.
Each string has 24 RGB "pixels", and he also sells an ethernet board where you can control up to 64 strings. You can get 24 bits of color per light, and 50 frames/sec refresh rate. And he has AWESOME documentation on how to drive it from a computer, meaning we can work on scripting the lights into cool patterns, but more importantly like we were talking, we can hook it into MIDI data hopefully! So like different notes, synths, drum pads whatever produce different effects. I also had other ideas on how to drive other things besides lights, like relay servos or imagine explosions of fog triggered by the music. I could see it all working quite interestingly on the Unimog like van you were telling me about.
Also with the Triklits, I was thinking we could pull off that Petri dish idea, where we could have amoebas, made of glowing leds, and the lights would "grow" outward and color change.
There's definitley some interesting possibilities.
