NEWS
It’s hard to avoid the massive shadow the Beach Boys have cast across almost every sunny short wave synth harmony sung since. To make matters worse, Brian Wilson and crew also cornered the market for complex production arrangements, compacting multi-layered vocals and unorthodox instrumentation into a simple-sounding pocket symphony.
As you’re reading this, Bmore’s Among Wolves are putting together their own endless summer, recording and performing material for a promising sophomore LP. Not sure how they get inspiration for these vibrations in the city that reads, but the jams below are tighter than McNulty and a handle of Jameson. Have a taste. Butter Team - Will 3/13/08

Among Wolves put on the best performance of the night. Their music is fresh and unheard of in my mind. Who can blend experimental indie pop rock with synthesizers seamlessly with straight up country rock? Among Wolves. They threw it down, even throwing a Johnny Cash cover into the mix when they did the band member switch-a-roo (bass player played drums-piano player played bass- drummer played lead guitar and sang). If you get a chance, please go check them out...they put on a show that is worth every cent. Pasta Primavera - 1/12/07 LO-FI Social Club

Our Pastappreciation (yeah, I made that up) for Among Wolves has been well documented HERE and HERE, so I’m just gonna give you some quick hits from their 8x10 show last night: Billy Tiedeken is a trooper. He has been fighting laryngitis for two weeks, but still tried his best to make it through the set. Sadly, he lost the battle with his throat. These guys clearly love playing together. They constantly joke and laugh. It’s refreshing to see a band that really likes playing shows.

"Among Wolves mixes a little Beechwood Sparks, with a little Sadies and a touch of Jayhawks to get at their hybrid sunny California-jangle-pop meets midwestern americana rock." Songs: Illinois

Speaking of risk takers...enter Among Wolves. They’re a folk-alt-country-pop-experimental band from Baltimore. I know you’re looking at that description and saying WTF, but you can’t really narrow these guys down any more. Here’s my take. It’s as if the Allman Brothers were travelin’ west on a prairie wagon with their standard instruments to play. Along the way they picked up a theremin, short wave radios, casio keyboards, toys, and synthesizers. Then they reinvented themselves by playing Beach Boys songs for the rest of the trip. Basically Among Wolves has a strong grasp of the history of American music and can pretty much play it all. Instead of it sounding like mush, they blend it seamlessly into a unique modern style that should earn them acclaim in the future. Go...be...among wolves. Pasta Primavera

Wonderfully accessible, yet innovative, alt-country songwriting that hardly fits into a genre.
Among Wolves’ self-titled album is an impressive blend of the experimental and the accessible. The group combines these elements with an ease and grace that creates a really enjoyable listen. Influences are as wide-ranging as Wilco, The Flaming Lips, Death Cab for Cutie and The Beach Boys. Among Wolves, however, have a sound that is all their own.
As the album opens, it is clear right away from the psychedelic “Sleep and Dream” that the band is far from ordinary, with its slow, dreamy synths and distortion. Following this is the fun tune “Black Eyed Susan,” that shows how Among Wolves could fit the category of alt-country. The hand claps and harmonies, along with a great piano part, make this song one of the most memorable on Among Wolves.
An admirable element of the album is the involvement of all members in different ways. The foursome can all sing (very well, too) and each plays a variety of instruments, from the average guitar, bass, drums, and piano, to the unusual use of lap steel, harp, banjo, bowed upright bass, violin, and toy xylophone. The extensive instrumentation and vocal diversity keep the album fresh and interesting throughout. There is never a dull moment.
“Bottle” is another standout track. This short and sweet, up-tempo jingle infuses the album with energy, after the slower tracks that precede it. The bright-sounding organ gives a happy feel to a song that includes the dark lyric: “if you’re looking for me, I’ll be at the bottom of a bottle.” In the next track “Seems to Me”, the banjo plays an important role, as it really makes the chorus stand out.
With a clear Beach Boys influence in “Baltimore,” Among Wolves give a shout-out to their hometown in Maryland, with a hauntingly pretty ending on the keyboard. It flows nicely into the methodically-paced “Love pt. 7,” that blends banjo, mandolin, and violin, amid other unique sounds. Among Wolves ends with “Winter Days,” leaving the listener entirely satisfied. This album has a completeness to it that makes it enjoyable to listen to again and again, and it is highly recommended. "I hate labeling bands and forcing them into one category or another, but some bands sort of encompass and define a genre and then it’s probably not such a bad idea, and in this case it might be the best way to describe them. Anyway, Among Wolves are an alt-country band to the fullest extent, and don’t get me wrong, that’s awesome. While making a sound that’s incredibly optimistic and uplifting, it’s good to hear the lyrics are not just about partying and having a great time, but seem a little more personal and heartfelt ("I’d love to see you/Out on the porch swingin/Back and forth and/Back and forth/You blocked the sun/You blocked the days from my eyes" off "Love Pt. 7). I mean since Kings of Leon became "art rock" and gave up trying to make good music (I thought Because Of The Times was garbage, shoot me) and Modest Mouse kind of got used up and overplayed (don’t really know how I’ll justify this one but We Were Dead... just didn’t have the same timelessness that Good News... or The Moon and Antarctica did), there’s just been a void of musicians that make music cooped up in a basement while downing bottles of whiskey and luckily, Among Wolves fill that void with a sound that’s as much The Beach Boys as it is Howlin’ Wolf." "This whole indie alt-country thing is amazing ain’t it? Among Wolves is another notch on that freakin’ rad belt. Formed in Philly in ’01, they began to record lo-fi alt-country tunes and then moved to Baltimore where the group really started to take shape. Using such diverse instruments as a theremin, short wave radios, toys, synthesizers, and old Casio keyboards, Among Wolves is not what you might expect out of alt-country. But when they break out the lap steel, upright bass, and banjo they most certainly are. How often can you say you’ve heard a band capable of managing all of that and not sounding like a total disaster? Indeed this collection of tunes is accessible, digestible, and yet firmly to the left of anything you’d ever hope to find popping up in the mainstream (or underground for that matter). Devilishly clever, you wonder if they were at that famous crossroads along with Robert Johnson making a deal too." Smother: J-Sin

The record itself contains a little bit of both rock and country, with many very strong songs. Among Wolves does a very capable job of being imitative—aping Wilco (Yankee Hotel Foxtrot-era on “When We’re Dead,” and pure Summerteeth on “Bottle”), Ryan Adams (“The Weight”), or the Beach Boys (unashamedly, on “Baltimore”). But the band is at its best when at its most original, and coincidentally, most country. Tunes like “Hard to Die” and “Seems to Me” are driven by free-and-easy backbeats and textured instrumentals from the lap steel and banjo. And even though the coarse flashiness of Haywood’s delivery and the droning, stoner-rock guitars of “Black Eyed Susan” recall Yo La Tengo, the song explodes nicely into three shout-n-clap-along choruses. AMONG WOLVES- S/T- THE BEECHFIELDS- Philly guys who seem like they play truly cos’ they love it. The kind guys who probably don’t care if they ever get signed to a big label and practice 4 times a week for 8 hours at a clip. I hear bits of My Morning Jacket and Neil Young. I really liked Jason Butcher’s “Hard to Die.” dagger zine

Bottle-Swirling organ recalls the psychedelic 60’s flavor of dance, with some extremely cool guitar crunching during the last minute of the song. I’ve tried to dream the lyrics deeply and see how much they affect he dance? “How come when I ask you the simplest question. . .Do you love him? You said that you loved him I guess you changed your mind.” I haven’t found the answer because I’m too busy moving to think. Definitely a tune to keep the dance floor filled on hump day, while the bottles of beer and other beverages sit on the table gathering water beads for 2 ½ minutes. Those bottles sure look good after dancing so hard, but get a few slugs in quick cause these guys drag you right back up with the shoutout tune, Just In Case. This tune takes us on a completely different, slower dance movement, and includes a deeper story. Very cool played back-to-back.
Hard to Die-“I’m fast asleep in the colour of your eyes.” Don’t fret the words, this lovely lively hump day tune have my feet smiling happily even as I gulp down a plate of chips and a nice iced cold long necked Lone Star. It’s easy to hear the tambourine man swinging that tiny instrument back and forth around my legs as I head up one side of the floor and down the other. The musicians could be from next door, or from 2000 miles away in California, or 2000 miles in the other direction in Massachussetts. Universal American dance music. The shout-out tune, When We’re Dead” slows down the dance and features more flavors as we hear “the tree are on fire” and visit small town America and hear the “church bells ringing from the steeple in your town.” Eartaste
