Amperes, based in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, consists of Hal (guitar) and Markus (drums). After Brooklyn rockers Tear Us Apart disbanded, the band's former guitarist started jamming with the Jibber Jabber drummer in their shared rehearsal space. The band began as a duo, with Hal and bassist Martin, who played bass on the recording of "Sutures." After Martin's departure, Markus lent his bass playing skills to the band's second round of recordings.
