amps do furnish a room (adfar) is a musical collective based in chapel hill, nc comprised of several area musicians, including members of boat burning, dom casual, killer filler, jeff hart band and the old ceremony
projects/shows/obsessions:
o "afdar garage" (aka "thee dirtybeats") - "the roots of iggy": swaggering, obscure psychedelic / garage / proto-punk from the 60s, with a special emphasis on rare nc garage rock nuggets from the blue mold archival series tobacco-a-go-go;
o "adfar tv" - Television's influential art-punk masterpiece Marquee Moon, performed live in its entirety;
o "adfar byrds" - a live recreation of the Byrds schizo, amphetamine-drenched breakup lp, The Notorious Byrd Brothers;
o "adfar bb" (aka "boat burning") - post rock psychedelia and hard ambiance: an experiment in 100% live instrumental improvisation, each boat burning performance is totally unique
o "adfar" (aka "just plain adfar") - a show of any combination of the above.
background:
one january afternoon, members of the obscure cultural discussion group bullcity went for a hike near the hollow rock bridge on erwin road in durham nc. when they returned, they felt the urge to play music.
much as the setting inspired their forebearers from the same community, the hollow rock string band and the red clay ramblers, the group was inspired to hold regular jams characterized by much wild abandon; but unlike their forebearers', these sessions were vigorously electrified, and informed by more recent musical history...
a plan took shape: for 1 year, the un-named combo would meet each sunday to analyze and rehearse Television's landmark lp "Marquee Moon" in the most minute detail, much in the way a highly focused academic group might
systematically tackle a complex subject for intense study; and then perhaps, if there was sufficient interest, attempt to play the beast live for a few friends... it was agreed that above all else, these sessions, despite their intense focus, were to be low-stress and fun, that the ultimate goal was to create a friendly no-hassle environment which each member might view as a refuge from and reward for a hard week's work, an opportunity to play purely for the simple joy of doing so...
...and if, after a year, the group agreed things went pretty well, maybe they'd pick something else to study for a year, and play that live, too...
thus amps do furnish a room* was born.
what's next? a peter laughner retrospective? the kinks' muswell hillbillies? the rolling stones' rock and roll circus? metal machine music? frampton comes alive? the who sell out? stay tuned...
"...Amps will do Television's all-time classic record "Marquee Moon" in it's entirety. If you've never seen the band do Television, go see them pronto...!"

"...who saw this coming? Amps Do Furnish a Room, in addition to being Jeff Hart's 100th band or so, honor the angular guitar adventures of Television..."
