Were we to give the recipe for Amrok's style of music, the main ingredients would have to be : Bjork's experimental aspect, Massive Attack for their creativity and use of electro-acoustics and a hint of some of Tori Amos' style characters for their fragility verging on wildness. We could then mix them all together with a pinch of jazz and improvisation to try and get an insight into the music of this incredible French singer/musician duo who write and compose all their own music.
When Sabine Chambers and Christophe Duffaut create a song, they generally start off by composing the music - a blend of electronic piano and percussion instruments - they then add their words. Music and words are in perfect harmony and play an equally important role in their compositions, the music providing the inspiration and support for the words. Bewitching ethnic sounding melodies are the backdrop to Sabine's powerful and emotional voice.
On stage, Sabine alternates her voice with vocal effects - which she controls with a foot pedal - and also plays percussions ; Christophe plays piano/keyboards and does the backing vocals. He also modulates the electronic sounds which he creates. Their songs - in French and in English (Sabine Chambers is Franco-Irish) - are a festival of fantasies, realities, fairytales and anger which they express through their own personalities or through tormented and touching characters.
Now just sit back and let yourself glide along in their world.
There was a man played piano in a bar. He was a good piano player. People came out just to hear him play. But one night, a patron told him he didn't want to hear him just play anymore. He wanted him to sing a song.
The man said, "I don't sing."
But the customer was persistent. He told the bartender, "I'm tired of listening to the piano. I want that guy to sing!"
The bartender shouted across the room, "Hey buddy! If you want to get paid, sing a song. The patrons are asking you to sing!"
So he did. He sang a song. A piano player who had never sung in public did so for the very first time. And nobody had ever heard the song Mona, Mona Lisa sung the way it was sung that night by Nat King Cole!
He had talent he was sitting on! He may have lived the rest of his life as a no-name piano player in a no-name bar, but because he had to sing, he went on to become one of the best-known entertainers in America.
You, too, have skills and abilities. You may not feel as if your "talent" is particularly great, but it may be better than you think! And with persistence, most skills can be improved. Besides, you may as well have no ability at all if you sit on whatever talent you possess! The better question is not "What ability do I have that is useful?" It is rather "How will I use whatever ability I have?"
NEW LOCATION! Even thought the beachside grill isn't going to be open until next week, THE MUSIC MUST GO ON!!!! It's still in downtown Oceanside, just around the corner on pierview way! Pierview Pub!
